ive fitted new discs and pads, hammered off the brake drums and tried to get some adjustment on the handbrake but have only managed one tough click-not good and ive had a VCU from bells fitted. and 5 new tyres..

today on an A road when i hit 70 the whole back of the car was shaking like crazy with a really deep vibration that sounded like a chinook about to land on the car.

feels brake drum related as when i slam the brakes on a get a clunk cluck from the passenger rear side.

are there any guides on here on how to set the drums and handbrake up? cheers.

If you hammered your brake drums off, can't workout how they adjust, take it to someone who knows what they are doing before you kill someone.

If its knocking under breaking, I would assume something is loose. Ive had loose discs, wheel bearings and wheels on various cars I've driven which will all give a similar feel to the car. Wheels tend to fall off though and that is more noticeable.
Go back through everything, haynes manuals will be more than enough to guide your way through usually too. Failing that your going to have to go to a garage to get it set up properly.

yes i know what auto adjusters are thanks. still doesnt stop serious corrosion from hindering the removal of rusted drums. what aspect of hammering do you believe might kill someone? if the hammer slips from my hand and wallops a stray sheep? or is it likely that the drum will shear the wheel studs and go on a flesh eating rampage upon the good citizens of cambridgeshire?

what are you getting at sad angry person? do you know someone who died from hitting a brake drum and have the car land on them?

i have had a 1969 mgb with less rust on than these before id clean them.

hammering off a brake drum isnt going to kill anyone except maybe my ear drums.

why a 2004 car has drums on in the first place is beyond me.

wondering if it might be a bearing actually..sort of feels a bit 'up and down/shakeyness' when it was doing it.

well obviously she misread my thread title thinking it said " can someone please speak to me like i am a c*nt" no? rude person. time of month etc..

i didnt know that my brake warning light might come on because of the switch failure until i joined landyzone so as far as not knowing what im doing, well, i dont have a haynes but i know what a brake drum looks like, how it works and what manual and auto adjusters do(which i might add are poop!). i thought forums were for people to pick up tips and share them if they like to communicate that kind of information. i just think its probably better not to say something if youre just being malicious or bitter or whatever her heavy rag is doing to her this month. maybe the world is a nicer place if we can sometimes just stfu ; ) init?

sounds as though you need new handbrake cables is it manual or auto if it is auto and the brakes are seriously binding you will ruin the gearbox

This^^^^
The handbrake cables seizing is a common fault. This causes the drum to get very hot which often makes them change into a slight oval shape. This oval shaped drum then catches on the shoes as it rotates giving the judder. Once you stop, the drum cools and returns to the correct round shape and the fault appears to have vanished!

thanks for the considered replies : )

i thought it was the shoes originally because this vibration felt like it was caused by some sort of grabbing feeling rather than a worn bearing that would grind and howl a bit more than this deep deep chinook sound> so do these cables just seize and can be unseized? i"ll whip it out, set the adjusters to way back when and put it back together. hope its not a bearing because that looks like a proper pain in the butt.

The handbrake cables cannot generally be restored once they start to seize. It's an easy job to change them and not to expsive. It's well worth checking before buying new ones though.

so conventionally a hand brake cable would need replacing once it had become too stretch and has reached the limit of adjustment-but on a freelander it seizes and just generally buggers up? that makes sense and sounds about right : ) stupid car.. i'll get them off at the weekend and see if i can work out where they are 'stuck'? before ordering new ones
