Hi all, need to check and maybe top up the oil in my transfer box and manual gearbox. The filler for the gearbox is hard to get to - I need to somehow squirt the oil into it - are there any crafty tools or homebrew solutions for doing this?

Cheers

Jerry

I use a garden sprayer with the lance removed, don't use an old one though that may be contaminated. New ones are only about €8 over here for a cheapy.

Keith - that is a superb idea! Off to the garden centre I go........

Do you happen to know if the transfer box filler is similarly awkward? If so I guess I need two sprayers one for ATF the other for gearbox oil.....

Cheers

Check your handbook, pretty sure the transfer box uses ATF that's what it looks like in mine, or is your gearbox manual? In which case do the ATF first and just drain the sprayer overnight before you do your gearbox:)

Transfer box filler is worse than the auto box filler IMO.

I use a reversible 12v fuel pump from hobbystores mounted in a diy wooden case with an old motorcycle battery, I fitted the switch at the end of a coil wire to so I can operate the pump remotely. You can use it to remove or add fluids.

Hi. Don't know if this would apply to you but I just added fluid to my RRC auto gearbox by simply putting a funnel to the mouth of the fluid dipstick tube and adding it that way.

I added a schrader valve to the sprayer, just a squeeze on the airline trigger and the oil moves. It comes out on it's own though I do have an mains electric pump but that takes ages.

Miser's solution. Kids' drink bottles with the sucky top. Where there is more space, you can fit this to a 2 litre bottle. Squeeze bottle.

I got one of these yesterday to do my transfer and diff oils.

Clarke CGG500 500cc Oil Suction Gun - Machine Mart

I got one like that, oil ****es out round the plunger unless you can hold it vertical and there is no room for a babies bottle if you want to get all the contents into the box, even the bottle the Lucas ****e comes in cannot be completely emptied. The garden sprayer does the lot with no effort and will take the whole 5 litres in one go for an oil change.:)

I ran into the same issue a few weeks ago when I moved the gearbox cooler and I thought while I'm under and covered in crud I may as well change all the oil and replace the filter.

I used an old jar and some flexi tubing sealed with silicone to fill mine - here is a diagram

I think you would have to use much thicker tube than I used to pass manual gearbox oil through!

but it's easy to use - can use your lungs, or if you're lazy like me - your airline ;-)

Could make this with a car tyre valve for the air inlet, you would be able to connect and use a foot pump/bike pump/or electric pump then for those with out an airline.

It really doesn't take much effort to blow it through, but after it's been used and sat in your garage for a while I bet you won't want to put the tube in your mouth! plus gets a little tiring when replacing all of the fluid, that's why I said airline ;-) if your thinking of fitting a tyre valve to the jar do it the other way around so you can connect the tyre to the jar and use the air pressure in your spare wheel to push the fluid - easier than pumping a foot pump ;-)
