Now, my TD5 auto is low mileage, just 60k. Immacuale service history, probably over-serviced. Anyway, it takes bout 2-3 months for the OED coolant to drop, enough to notice when cold, always do a under-bonnet check weekly. The fluid is "As New", totally clean. The oil is perfect, checked this on the dipstick, the cap, and the spinner housing. NO SIGNS of head probs.

Anywhere specific to the TD5 I should look for the leak, or evaporation. Not enough loss to drip onto floor, but like a motor as perfect as can be.

Engine temp needle runs perfectly half, always

Thanks for any advice

I posted same had my car in garage as i was suffering same problems as you and they found a problem with the head
Afraid it's usually the head. Mine started to leak in August. We found a leak in the rad so replaced it, but it continued to go down - not a lot but about an inch on a 300 mile run. Got worse in November after about 6000 miles and started to push out the odd puff of white smoke. Turned out to be a cracked head. There was no oil contamination at all, since it was cracked at an exhaust port and the coolant was going straight down the tube. I reckon the rad was just a bit weak and the extra pressure was too much for it.

how much did your new head cost you pastmaster
Had it done by a nice man in Kent (Stuart Gilbert Landrovers) who knows about Landies. Head, gaskets and bolts were 1265 pounds plus vat. Testing and fitting 1075 ponds plus vat. Also renewed injector loom - good thing to do if you're doing this job. It's unfortunately quite a complex job on the TD5. Also involved putting right some of the mistakes main dealer made last time the gasket went... And I'm too old and (mainly) lazy to do it meself.

Ok cheers for that was it a new head or recon the garage where mine is is fitting a recon and its a grand supply and fit and there a memebr of the engine remanufacters thingy and specialise in rebuilding land rover engines

That's the cheaper option. There's some question about whether you can skim the head (LR say no, forum members say yes!) - we decided to put a new one on as the advice was that this model is prone to cracking and if you get a recon you're never sure what you're getting. But if your man is a specialist and does the recons himself it should be OK. Btw MAKE SURE THEY USE STEEL DOWELS - ours was originally supplied with the plastic ones and they are crap.

Good luck - mine is purring beautifully now.:)
