Hi all,

I'm new to this forum but have had a look at some similar threads but can't find a defnitive answer. I have a '51 plate 2.5v6 which has recently started making a constant grinding noice when moving, either forward or in reverse.

I recently had the car MOT'd and it passed and I've recently had all four tyres replaced, at which point it was noticed that the rear brakes seemed to be binding. I have just had it serviced and the handbrake cable was replaced as that is what was apparently causing the problem with the brakes. The front pads were also replaced.

I had hoped that the all this work would have cured the noise, but it's still the same. The car itself doesn't seem to be driving any worse and there are no changes to the tone of the grinding noice when faster/slower/under braking.

Any ideas?!?

Can't feel anything through the floor. Took it back into my local garage yesterday and they tell me its a bearing in the prop shaft. Sounds like the cheapest option will be to remove it and make it into a 2wd! The garage has offered to keep hold of the prop shaft and are happy to re-fit it if there's a bout of snow etc when I may actually need 4wd. Maybe my fuel economy will improve in the meantime...?!

you will need to tell your insurance company if you remove it and the handling will be ****

you beat me to it Rodie also the handeling will be different it will be the two i mentioned sometimes you feel them somtimes you do not

It's not all that difficult to fit the bearings on the VCU (which is what I assume you mean by "bearing on the propshaft?). I'd be inclined to get the prop taken off by the garage and have a go at replacing them yourself when you get some time. Once done, refit the prop. You need to spilt the prop halves from the VCU to do it, but it's quite do-able. Make sure you get good quality OEM bearings though! (See other posts for details - got a feeling there was one only yesterday talking about this. I think Singvogel mentioned somewhere he'd seen proper ones for sale at a good price).

If you're unsure about the work involved and you're ever down this part of Sussex, come and introduce yourself. PM me and we can arrange a date/time for you to bring your prop down and I'll help you do it. I need to do my bearings soon so it might, er, prompt me into action too!

I'm doing mine on my 2001 TD4, I'm fitting the GKN ones, sourced from a local dealer. i'm doing most of the work myself, except for the removal of the bearings from/to the VCU as you need a press for this, son's mate's dad has a press and is doing this gratus for me.
