Its a 1998 Discovery 1 3.9 V8 SE with a mere 67k on the clock (which checks out on the VOSA MOT reports). Condition all looks fairly good. Usual few little chips and scratches, roof lining sagging a little due to previous sunroof leak (so they have now been sealed up). Its got the full leather interior with heated electric front seats, 7 seats, Alpine stereo. Engine seems really good, and smooth.

Drove it back 190 miles from London and it didn't miss a beat. Only thing I noticed though was that the interior heater wasn't able to blow HOT air. It only managed a mild warmth, definitely not hot.

Another thing I noticed though under the bonnet, was that part of the airbox, the tube (I assume it was a tube) that comes off the front of the airbox facing the front of the car, has been but off. Why I dont know. Any ideas? Would have took a photo but it was too dark.

So what do you reckon to it?

Could be thermostat stuck open, easiest way to get an idea is if you run the engine for a few minutes the engine should warm up but the radiator should still be cold until the thermostat opens.

Looks like a very tidy machine.

John.

Looks good but it all depends what you paid. Looks a lot like my very first disco, but it isn't.

Heater
They can leak so people put in radweld which can block the pipes. They run from the back of the engine at the top.

Sludgy water inside can hinder heat. And as mentioned above, thermostat can be the culprit.

Recommend new thermostat and a flush through with the hose pipe, then back flush and refill. It isn't the head, trust me.

The tube at the front if the air box gets blocked up when fitting a snorkel so just plug it up and you're done.

190 miles, that cost about £85 then lol

Will try the thermostat test you mention tomorrow once I have been out for a run in it. Thanks for the tip.

What I paid for it? I paid £xxxx for it which I think for the condition and low mileage is a very good price...... but don't tell everyone ;) What do you think?

Not sure about the snorkel for the airbox yet as just struggling to find a V8 one. I fancy one for the 'look' but dont want to spend a fortune on a brand new one. What would have previously been there?

190 miles cost me £59.11 so I worked it out and reckoned it did 19 mpg.

nice, shiny, oxford blue too. Is this the beginning of a build thread!!!I hope so!

Possibly :D

Very smart, do the ceiling windows leak? ;P

They did previously so they have now been sealed up by the previous owner.

Here is a picture of what I mean about the airbox:

Should be an angled tube going to the nearside wing .. but that is the inlet side, so as long as there's an air filter in, it's OK (ish) to run like that.

just missing the trumpet on the airbox. Defintely for 2nd battery, cos the jack goes just in front there. Done it to mine

Did a quick check on the radiator tonight to see if it is getting warm or not (re the interior heater not warming right up). Started the car up and kept feeling the top radiator hose to see if it warmed up and it did. So I have ordered a new thermostat as they are only cheap, and will swap that out and drain the coolant, flush it out, and refill.
