Never had a clutch go before, so i'm a bit confused. I understand how a clutch works, but not how its gone so weird. I was at traffic lights, pulled away and seemed to loose all power for about 10 seconds, then had intermittent power for 5 min. Stopped at petrol station, and when i left there it wasn't too bad. But now it take loads of revs to pull away, and the revs need to be higher to change gear. Don't really want to drive anywhere now i've got it home, just in case. Any thoughts?

Put the hand brake on , try to pull away if there feels like there is no resistance , its slipping if its trying desperately to pull away its not ,providing your hand brake is good:)

Ok just been out and tried that. Even more confused now. The clutch bites and pulls the slack out of the hand brake, but at the point you'd expect the engine to stall or struggle, it just revs. I got to 1300rpm with no odd noises fron the engine. surely it should have stalled before then? SO does that mean its slipping?

Sounds like its slipping would either rev and drag your or rear end down or stall so sounds like its slipping

If you leave it too long you won't be able to change gears . Another way get to fourth gear gently and floor it if it revs more that it moves its slipping you might find its worse when hot too.

bugger. another cost i cant afford! ok so how long to do a clutch? and as i need to look at the transfer box and gear box might as well do them at the same time. Thats me with out wheels, and all i was waiting for was the snow! Guess what the forecast is tomorrow! Arrrggghhh!

What landy is it??

The clutch can be sorted quite speedily , no real need to go right thru the drivetrain , unless you have other problems ? Dont drive it around as it could fail altogether , and or do damage to flywheel. HTSH

ps what wheels is it in ?

Its a 300tdi disco. I've always had probs with 2nd gear crunching, so was going to fix it someday. And i have massive movement in the front prop from the T/F box, so suspect warn parts in there as well. I wont drive it any more, even if it snows! What do you mean what wheel is it in?

Just inquiring as to what vehicle is the clutch in ?
In a defender you can just slide the transmission back a bit to get at the clutch from top . 2nd gear can be a bit sticky for quite a while before you need to sort it JMHE

What wheels is what car I'm afraid if you don't do it yourself 600/ 800 quid as said leave trsnsmision sure your propshaft isn't worn? 2 gear they all do that when they get old keep revs down when changing from 1 to 2

No hope of affording a fender at the mo! I think I'm going to pause the insurance for a month or 2, and just do all the work that has stacked up. Sills need replacing, and rear x-member, front arches welding up, and new rear axle. and needs new brakes all round. Apart from that, sound as a pound!

300 disco mate. Cant afford someone else to do, thats why i'm doing my best to learn all i can from you guys. Its nice to know the props wear out. Didnt know they could. Never thought about it really. Well I can look into it when everything's off i suppose.

Yea I've only done it a fender trolley jack and through the top with blocks of wood and a strap :) probably for you a weekend should suffice good luck get a second opinion on clutch just to make sure :)

Have already replaced the UJ's thats why I thought the T/F box. I will let a mechanic I know look at it before starting, but from what you have said, i think its a foregone conclusion. Cheers for pointing the way everyone.
