I set about replacing the clutch on my TD4 today, but after several hours in my father in law's workshop, failed to get past removing the IRD.

We followed the instructions from the Rave CD (they seemed to be for the pre face lift model), only a few changes to remove the underbelly. Every thing was going fine until we tried to remove the last bolt on the IRD. There are two bolts on the top of the IRD which fasten to the gearbox, the first (the one towards the back of the engine bay) came out with a little effort and every extension bar we had to get a ratchet on through the wheel arch, but its neighbour would not budge, we couldn't get a decent grip of the bolt head. Does anyone have an idea how you are supposed to get at this bolt.

We thought about taking the IRD and gearbox out as a unit, but there appears to be a flange attached to the engine block which prevents this. Also there is a bolt trapped by the IRD which fastens the flange to the gearbox. I presume this bolt is the main reason for taking the IRD off.

I am going to have to bite the bullet and get it fixed by a mechanic as my father in law finishes work this week to emigrate to Australia. Got a quote from the dealer in excess of £700 - ouch! Does anyone know of a cheap mechanic in the Ripon/Harrogate/Otley area. I have the bits I just need someone to do the work.

Thanks in advance for any help

Havent tackled the Td4, I think I recall seeing something about starting to undo the gearbox bolts and mount so the IRD is at an angle. Clutchdust will tell you for sure.
