Clutch Master Cylinder Snapped off Gearbox??

I only bought it 12 months ago and the garage had just put a low mileage Rover 75 engine in and new clutch due to the previous engine popping the head gasket so wasn't expecting it to break so soon. You guys keep saying it needs to be maintained but how do you maintain a closed clutch hydraulic unit?

Also I'm getting confused I thought the lower part of they system with the rod that goes into the Clutch was the Master cylinder of have I got it the wrong way around and the master is the one on the top?

The master cylinder is the top cylinder. The slave is the cylinder attached to the gearbox.
If you look at the lever that the slave pushes against, you will notice that there is a shaft that goes through the box casing. This shaft gets rusty and sizes up. This overloads the hydraulics and the mounting bracket. Some oil on the shaft keeps it free to move.

That makes more sense in which case the Slave cylinder has ripped out. Once I get a new one fitted I'll keep and eye on it.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR ADVICE;)

Just come back from the garage. Turns out the metal bracket on the engine had snapped and the slave cylinder seems Ok still. So he is going to try and weld a new bracket together and put it back on to see if it works before changing the clutch hydraulics if they need to.

This is where they rust.

That's mine part cleaned.
I just need to rebuild the car now.

In the long run, prevention is better cure. The clutch release lever needs to be freed off and lubricated. The bracket is cheap as chips on ebay!!

Here you go £10 delivered ;)

Thanks for that.
After looking at the hydraulics they look newish so guess they got changed when they fitted the engine 12 months ago.

The mechanic working on it is a Land Rover chap but he is more used to 90's and Range Rovers than a Freelander but should know what he's doing.

A lot of non Freelander specific technicians go by this . If it isn't in the book, it doesn't need to be done.
The Freelander has lots of little Maintenance quirks that once known, can be applied. These save money and time in the future.

Got the car back today. Mechanic has repaired the bracket and strengthened it so its stronger than the original. Lost a bit of fluid since the rod popped out but all sealed up again without any problems.

As mentioned in this thread - check the slave mounting bracket for bends or cracks, try and free up the lever with loads of 3 in 1 spray - spray it while someone else presses the clutch pedal, see if it starts to work. good luck.
