Clutch change.

Good evening gents.
We have picked up a 1.8 2005 Freelander for my wife which is the hardback version. Not sure if that matters tbh.
The gears are just not right and I can only put it down to the clutch needing replaced.
Can anyone advise on the best clutch kit to purchase and a rough price I'd expect to pay for a garage to replace the clutch. In West Lothian if there are any decent garages anyone has used.

When you say "not right" - what do you mean?

It might be something simple like putting some oil on the clutch release arm where it goes through the bell housing to see if that makes things any better (it tends to stick/seize).

Started off having issues going into second. Went in fine and pulled away while stationery. It has recently started grinding while going into reverse. Had been fine until the past couple of weeks.

I would put the issue down to release lever being stiff, and the slave cylinder bracket damaged before the clutch itself. The 1.8 clutch generally has a long life, as the engine torque is low.

A couple of weeks ago I went for a round of golf and thought/noticed the gears were a bit more difficult to engage. I asked Mrs Grumpy if she thought the gears had been a bit more difficult to engage and she said no. Next day she took the dog up the park and I asked her to take note of the gears and see if she thought they were any more difficult. Next thing I get a call from her from the park car park - clutch peddle has gone to the floor!

I went up there and the slave cylinder was hanging loose having come away from the support bracket.

When I got it off the car, the bracket had fractured and 1 of the lugs holding the cylinder in place has snapped off allowing the cylinder to move and then fall off.

Replacement bracket and hydraulics fitted and its good as new.

So I'd have a good look at the bracket - and oil the release arm.

Don't know how much the parts cost, I took them off my parts car as they were brand new on there when I got it.
