Hello, loaned car to family friend while he house sat for us for three weeks. When he picked us up at the airport he said he'd just heard a grindy noise as he'd parked up.
I drove the car and after a mile or so there was indeed a horrible grindy clunky rubbing knocking at the front which came on suddenly. Car was travelling in straight line at the time. Stopped on hard shoulder and had a poke round but couldn't see anything. Had kids and missus in car so set off again and there was no noise other than the occasional clunk on gearchange which has always been there if you don't change gear carefully enough.
Drove 60 miles home and all seemed fine, hoped it was a stone or something caught in disc guard (optimistic bunch we Disco drivers eh?)
Ok for a couple of days then today started doing it again, clattery grinding, I thought at first that the exhaust was trailing on the deck. Stopped for a quick check, nothing to see. Carried on a bit, noise came back, couldn't stop as was on mountain pass road.
Got car home, noise came and went, not constant, does it when turning either direction or driving straight.
Jacked front wheel where noise seemed to come from and first thing was the whole hub seems to have significant play - can even see the brake disk tilting as I shook the hub!
Second thing is a lot of noise from prop/front diff area when turning the wheel hub, will clunk loudly on commencing turning, in either direction and there is a lot of noise either from the UJ area or the front diff.

Sorry, gone on a bit possibly but not got a clue where to start really and possible divorce pending as our only car is not very driveable and we desperately need it to be!

you need to decide if the swivel hub bearings have gone or wheel bearing-someone moves it you watch.
other than that clicking would be a cv if you had no hub/ bearing play
pinion bearing also possible, but the hub/wheel bearing first to look at

Sounds like your swivel and/or wheel bearing have gone. Cheap and easy repair, my advice? get a full set of wheel bearings, swivel bearings, both swivel pins and rebuild that side.

Good luck
Dave

Thanks fellers, missus not speaking to me now, shoulda bought a focus :frown: Can I drive the car like this? Currently no other way to get the kids to their brand new school tomorrow....but obviously don't want to endanger them or anybody.
Cheers

Best case.. The noise will get so bad you will stop. Worse case.. The wheel may detach and carry on the journey without you: at 35o into the other traffic lane. Other option it will lock up throwing you rear end out 45o. I leave the tech stuff to others..cause and effect is my spec. subject. Been there , done it picked up the mess.

Quick return to this - yep, I knew I shouldn't drive it really but wanted someone to say 'nah, it's fine, drive it!' :) No time for ordering and rebuilding Dave as it's our only transport. Put it in a local Russkie garage my pal uses and they replaced the wheel bearings on both sides of the front. The drivers side had fallen apart, collapsed completely. Sorted now and back on the road. Still loads to sort....in an ongoing kinda way.
