if your freelander just clicks ,ignition lights just dim its your battery !! having changed my starter motor still clicked just not as loud a new battey sorted it . but to change starter its eaiser to remove battery and battery housing dont be fooled by some comments saying you can leave the battery on its a tight sqeeze with out it on lt alone with it on ps frelander v6 es hope this helps !! also the radio/cd player will need a code if you havnt got yours check the the serial no if it starts with the letter M followed by six digits ,the code can be found on you tube ,try cliff g:)

i had to drill mine !! my dremmel wouldn't touch it and theres another bolt under the battery
drill the head a small drill first then a large one tap the bolt head off and the stem will drop down !!

Why would you change the starter if you knew the battery was duff?

I have a new starter motor ready to go in, just can't remove the battery box cos the bolt holding the front clamp just turns :(

That old chestnut!! Every Freelander i'v ever owned except my currant V6 has suffered that little annoyance.

i didnt change the batt first because it gave me a false reading via volt meter, a couple of cells didnt work it charged to full on my charger but not enough to turn over and all the signs lead me to believe starter trouble ,so having the the starter tested it didn't work i changed it, but now i know the problem is solved. ps i thought this site was to help, not i told you so .

Hello,

Another favourite for causing this problem is a corroded engine earth connection (the earth cable from the battery to the engine).

Easy fix, just unbolt, clean and coppergrease the bolt and ring terminal... refit.
