A Few weeks back I had to change wheels around because
my son was painting all five wheels for me........

I have a ratchet type stand up Jack that has a 25mm dia approx
bar it fits into a hole on the front bumper so away I go
ratchet ratchet and find that all I was doing was bending the bumper

So down to the tyre place and give them £10 so I can return each
day with a painted wheel and changed them over for me.....

Now what happens if i have a blow out need to call AA to change
the wheel over ???

BTW don't seem to have the jacking points on the rear bumper
The bending of the bumper is this because the bumper is not
reinforced correctly or am I up the wrong path and need to
buy a bottle jack or something similar

Right, as you say there should be 2 holes, one on each side of the rear bumper, and on the front its not really the bumper (on a starndard bumper) you should jack. Its the end of the chassis where the bumper bolts into if that makes sence. If that is where you put it, and it bent, then I think you need to have a look at your chassis as its in a serious way.

I carry both the LR jack and a bottle jack. Its easier to get at as well, in my case it involves, folding the seats down and removing about 10 tow ropes, shackles, etc...

I was doing a bit of work over the summer involcing wheel changes, getting in to the chassis etc and I got used the bottle jack, little 2 toner, with a BIG block of wood to get it high enough, then I just put it under the points on the axle.

Bit extreem for changing a wheel on the motorway...

Yer I know what you mean, if you have the space, and don't think it would temp to many thieves, then a trolly jack in the back would not be such a bad idea. I would have to leave mine in full view.

stop worrying about what kind of jack you should be using and have a look at your chassis.

I got it wrong it was not the front but the rear
could not find anywhere on the front bumper
to fix the jack too

Right well there should be holes at the front of the chassis just below the bumper where it bolts in.

The back bumper will be a bit rusted I would imagine and it will bend up, it proablly needs a new rear cross member to be honest. But unless its actully rusting to pieces and falling apart I would leave it, and get a bottle jack.

Sounds like YD's got the right idea.

on the front, it's just below the bumper. if your defender is in good shape, you'll have two rubber caps there.you just have to pull them off and you'll find a hole to insert the jack.

on the rear, it's the 2 largest round holes on the cross member, can't go wrong.

I know I should not say this but... just in case my wife has a flat in the 90 I have a 2 bottles of that tyre foam. She can at least get home.
In my last series 1 I had the wheels treated with the puncture sealant. It's in all our cars, tractors etc. Its really quite good and worth considering. I will be having it put in the 90 when I have time.
