anyone got a chainsaw i could borrow for a few days, i'm near hertford in hertfordshire. been cutting down two evergreen trees and i'm left with two totem poles to cut down, the bowsaw just isn't working very well

A chainsaw is not really necessary - it only makes the job faster. Cut the wedge about 2 feet off the ground (dirt on the bark lower than that dulls a blade quickly). Cut the wedge on the side you wish the tree to fall, with the slant on the lower part of the wedge, and a horizontal cut on the top edge of the wedge about 2/3 of the diameter through. Then make a straight cut on the opposite side of the tree, almost to the wedge cut point.
Listen carefully to the warning sounds of creaks, groans or cracks, and move further away - the tree trunk will bounce back at the cut, sometimes in an unpredictable direction. (It could be coming at you and they are heavy!)

Closer to Hertford or Ware?????

there about 11" but are very close to the wall

Is there enough room to lay them down or do they have to be cut into rings and dropped???

Might be able to help you out possibly......

What ever you do be very carful. Especially with a chainsaw!!! Get yourself some chainsaw trousers and a forestry helmet. Make sure you know exactly what to do before you start and make sure you are aware of the saftey procedures. They are a hell of a lot more dangerous than people think, they will kill you with ease!
I know a guy who lost part of his lower arm because he just picked one up and started cutting. He wont do that again! (mainly because he can no longer hold it to operate it!)
I know all this saftey crap is boring and it takes time but it may save your life one day.

And ya should always do the green cross codr before ya cross the road,

I used a chainsaw to supply me own firewood, for about 8 years when I lived in Wales. And never used any safety gear except an helmet & visor And a pair of german para boots.

its better than nothing though. I did not mean to go off on a rant but this accident ruined my mates life and if me rambling on about saftey stops it ruining sombody elses then i am satisfied:)

My local Stihl dealer is doing the MS170 for £160 inc VAT just now.. seems like a good price. Ideal saw for thinning, or cutting thin trees. not too powerful either, so less chance of you injuring yourself....

Much less kickback from a 30cc saw with a 12" bar, than my 90 odd cc bar with a 25" bar!

Less chance of kickback as it will tend to stall before it kicks..

Less chance of somebody getting overambitious with a smaller saw.
