Can you buy new wheel bearings, or only a whole hub?

I have been told I need a new bearing in the front offside wheel. I trust the mechanic, so I'm sure I do! He tried to source new bearings, but has now been told that you cannot buy / replace just the bearing, but need the whole hub assembly from land rover for around £300, which includes the ABS sensor. Is that the only option / does that sound right?

I dont want to be mean but my advice is to be more carefull in who you trust... that mechanic should have known that on D2 u can't replace just the bearing but you need a wheel hub(so i suppose he had never fixed one:rolleyes:)... and also you must know that in 90% of cases a worn wheel hub bearing triggers the 3 amigos on dash.... u better read this www.discovery2.co.uk / Front Wheel Hub / Bearing Assy then if u are sure that's your problen these guys have the whole lot of it, just choose one http://www.lrdirect.com/TAY100060-Hub-Assy-With-Sensor-Ds-Td5-Fro/?sfi=TAY100060

At my last MOT it was pointed out there was a bit of play in the front offside wheel bearing, they passed it but put an advisory on it.That was last August,on the last decent run a week ago I experienced the two amigos !! Traction Control & ABS sierrafery notes above explains a lot.You can get a replacement hub assembly on ebay for around 170 quid, guess I'm going shopping soon too !

I had a osf bearing go on mine 2 weeks ago, Landrover Dealer £315 + VAT, with my Landrover Discount still £288+VAT, Britpart copy still £166 +VAT from LR Dealer. The genuine ones have a Timken bearing. Dont be fooled by OEM ones on E Bay, They are not Timken Bearing Stamped, I did buy a Britpart one off E Bay for £174, will see how it goes, seems ok so far but it is half the price.

It is my opinion that pattern parts are half the price or less but last usually half as long or longer.

Therefore they are worth buying.

If you do not do your own labour then fair enough, buy cheap buy twice pay for labour twice. You have to work that out for yourself but I think pattern parts are worth fitting if they pass visual inspection (some just look **** and aren't worth the effort)

Cheers

ive often used britpart d2 wheel bearings which is not what i would do with the tdi,s ,but over the years havent had any problems even on my own,i dont find many willing to pay £300

Are they the same as the P38 bearings that are a PITA to press out and replace and therefore suggested that you buy a whole hub instead??????

no not the same bearing ,but will come to pieces similary ,bearing for disco contains reluctor ring ,so not widely availale ,but if you could find a supplier you could change them

No, 38A wheel bearings are different (P38). It is definately a new hub you need, but you do get a new genuine ABS sensor with the Britpart one. I look at it as my original bearing lasted 97000 miles, so if I can get 47000 out of the ****part one then Im on a winner, albeit that I do my own repairs so no labour costs, look at it this way, how long are you keeping it? because you may have another bearing fail, or another 3, so I would definately take a chance with the Britpart ones.

as with all vehicles perhaps cheaper but mostly heading to unrepairable vehicles except by dealer

Aye Audi tried it didn't they back when I was at college a few years now.

They proposed to haver just a single flap for oil, water, screenwash PAS fluid etc. I remember that their proposed idea was banned because it stopped anyone but main dealers working on the vehicles and they had to make it more work friendly.

All manufacturers are heading the same way, even dealers have to spend a fortune on tooling up for new models. Look at all the new laws coming in for MOT testing.
