Can it really be that simple?

So I was having some of the standard V8 idling issues and kangarooing and cutting back on revs, not changing up gear and almost stalling when idling...You know, all that b**locks!;)
After looking around for some ideas and such, I was advised to try cleaning out the MAF sensor, so I took it apart and used some carb cleaner to clean the head and down the airflow pipe, took the air filter off and sprayed down there too after checking their was no dirt or crap blocking it, which there wasn't...
Either was it worked!!

Now I'm not complaining because it was ****ing me right off not being able to use it properly and now it seems to be fine, but is it?

Was it just a temporary fix, what do you think?

It just seems a little too easy to be the reason it was performing so badly...

Feel free to take the ****, but I'm allowed to be sceptical, nothings ever that simple!;)

The MAF is the main cause of many cases of poor running in fuel injected engines. The ECU uses it to control the amount of fuel injected into the engine. If it is not working properly, then the ECU tends to either over or under fuel the engine. Once a MAF does start to malfunction, it is usually time to replace it. Cleaning it can cure the problem. but it is usually only a tempory solution.

Yeah pretty much what I thought...
Any ideas of a price cause I've done a search and they tend to be very varied in price?

If I were you, I would go for the genuine article. You can buy cheap aftermarket ones, but they are usually of poor quality, and don't last long, or they are not correctly calibrated, which means your engine does not run as efficiently as it should.

 hi guys im havin same probs i think.i got td5 series2 51 plate only had a few weeks but feels like no power you have to floor it in every gear i cleaned air filter and pipes it was allright for bit now same again a neighbour said he had same prob and un pluged the wire to maff and bit more power so been using it few days but will i harm anything doin that:confused:

You won't harm anything, but your engine won't be running at peak efficiency. With no input from the MAF, the engine will be in "Default Mode" That is, it will will be running a fuelling map that is ok for most conditions, but not ideal.

Before unplugging the maf give the map sensor a clean and then give it a test drive. Then unplug yer maf and try again. The maf on a td5 will usually give the symptoms of extreme turbo lag so it will be like the pedal is hardly working for 10 secs and then the turbo will suddenly kick in. If it is sluggish full stop then it can often be the map sensor.

Okay this just gets weirder, after a few more miles of running fine it started doing it again!
So we had a play around cleaning bits and bobs and for what we could see it wasnt the MAF sensor, in fact I couldnt even see the bloody sensor inside the unit anyway, took the air filter off and it worked, the filter was a crap after market one and was heavily corroded and we thought this might be why under load, when the engine is warm its not getting enough air!
Worked fine for a few miles then started doing it again with no air filter, after a few more it started running fine! and still is now many miles later...
Still no filter on so running at maximum air intake!!?
Although why it wasnt running like crap before I dont know...
I really dont get it, im just holding my breath until it starts doing it again lol Seeing as it seems to work with no air filter and wilco didnt have any big enough I might just stick some tights over the end and be done with it:scratching_chin:
Wouldnt want any stoonies flying up in to my air intake ...
