I have just bought an 04 1.8 petrol Freelander from a local dealer. He has given it 12 months MOT and a service as part of the deal. By coincidence it was at 72000 miles. I pointed out that the cam belt should be changed with the 72000 mile service.

He didn't do it and has quoted me £250 plus VAT for a new cam belt and water pump fitted.

Is this fair, or should I push to get him to do it as part of the service he offered?

If a service was included in the sale then the service should be done properly this includes the changing of whatever needs doing at 72000 miles as stated by the service schedule.
If they wont do it properly then its a breach of contract - they either do it or ask them for a £250 refund to change it elsewhere.

A new belt and tensioner can be had for under £40. Can be fitted in around an hour and a half. I would expect to pay around £100 or so, plus the VAT. Not quite a deal breaker IMHO...

it may have already been done seeing as its 70000 miles or every 4 years on the 1.8i engine
check to see if it has any records of being done

I've looked in the service book. A previous dealer made a note at 50,000 a few years ago, but it looks like a reminder. I can call them and see what they say.

If they want to sell the car with only half the service done then I'd be walking away from the deal tbh. There are plenty of Freelanders on the market ;)
