im starting to worry but ive got a hell of a lot of cabin noise with relation to the engine/gearbox its a 2.5 dse manual. my auto electrican mentioned the other day he thought i might have a bulkhead grommit missing or something, the engine can be heard quite plainly at idle and when driving especially quite quickly the mechanical noise of the drivetrain/engine is pretty loud. I was just wondering if there are any parts which commonly cause this.

secondly mainly when colder if i drive fast (around 60) in 5th gear i get like a chatter from the gearbox which subsides after a while.

thanks for help with anything guys.

Chatter in fifth could be a tooth stripped off the gear - is there oil in the box and what type ?
Is it only 5th that it makes the noise in ?
What mileage is on the car ?
I would drop the sump plug and look for any bits of metal coming out with the oil and see what state and colour the oil is
Oil change will do it no harm anyway even if it's not the fault

Well as far as the noise from the engine goes - there arent that many holes in the bulkhead, the two main ones to check I guess would be the ones that are on each side of the vehicle.

To check them, open the bonnet and on the passenger side look behind the EAS box and check the bundle of wires that runs into the cabin through the bulkhead. Same goes for the drivers side, another bundle of wires go through just behind the coolant reservoir, check the grommet is there and present. Where does it sound like its coming from??

-Wills :)

just changed the oil and the old stuff looked alright, it sounds more like a rattle from the box that only happens occasionally.

as for the engine noise ill check those gromits, but it sounds like its coming from the centre of the dash area, the car is just noisy, put it this way driving at 50 my gf's fiesta 1.25 zetec is much much quieter.
