Byway, green lane, what is it?

I was roaming the countryside the other day and found myself down a dead end lane that stopped at a track with a sign saying, "UNSUITABLE FOR VEHICALS" can I drive down it or not? its just a muddy, rocky track, its wide enough for a land rover but whats the law on it?

check with the local authority council highways agency etc to see if there are any restrictions in place. were you on a byway or just driving round aimleslely which is not a good idea

When I said lane it was a minor road, fully tarmaced etc, it just went to no where.

If you can provide the OS grid ref then someone might actually be able to help you.
Just because a road is tarmac'ed doesn't mean it's ok to drive. It all depends on it's status which as quite rightly stated above, will be known to the local RoW office.

so what is it? muddy & rocky or fully tarmaced

Reading carefully, he drove down a tarmacced lane, and stopped at a muddy track.

Yeah what kevin said, You are allowed to drive on the tarmac bit, its just a country lane, with a dead end

unsuitable is not the same as prohibited.
