Buying used tyres and alloys

I've had chance to look really close at each tyre now - and I'm a bit ****ed off I missed a long scratch and a little nick on one tyre - see picture. The nick is about 1-2mm deep.

Also on other picture - on the inside of another tyre there is some sign of rubbing or wear near the rim. Why would this happen - someone ran it a bit flat I guess.

I may be just looking a spare set of alloys here...and maybe I should just get my wallet out and buy some new tyres.

If the REARS are borberline legal than what are the FRONTS like as deeper tread tyres on back normally ?

When I bought the car the front tyres had recently been replaced (possibly causing my VCU to wear out) - the rears are ok but need replacing soon. Note- these are the tyres that are on the car. This thread is concerned with a new set of alloys and tyres I've just bought....and may yet regret buying. See pics above.

probably run flat at some point. Either get shot of them for what you payed or use them as a set of winters. As long as there is no cord showing you arn't breaking the law. I should think the sidewall has gone soft by now.

I recently did a similar thing, brought 4 part worn tyres just to get the alloys out of my shed and on to my car. checked them over well but it was dark and ****ing down with rain. when i got home and they were dry i realised they were worse than they looked. I am using 2 of them on the front but the others i will just give to anyone who wants them . Good for somone who uses there freelander down tracks and as a farm hack.

The date stamp on these also said 2006 - michelin lattitude

Not sure about the second one but I really would not trust the first with that nick in the side wall.

Would be good to see a better pic of the rim damage. Perhaps with a bit less air in the tyre so you can push the rubber in. Personally I don't think I would use any of them. Not worth the risk. I too have chucked tyres out due to damaging them with cracks etc a few years ago.

Those 'holes' you mention between the bolt-holes are the famous 'dimples' that generally indicate the later, modified wheels.

These will be with the bigger clearance to fit the bigger discs and calipers fitted to all Freelanders after the introduction of the V6 and the TD4.

You guys never cease to amaze me with tiny and seemingly insignificant bits of useful knowledge! A big thanks.

It passed it's MOT btw...just needed two rear indicator bulbs as they had turned white apparently.

Congratulations on passing the dreaded MOT.

Please don't think that we know these little facts because we are clever bu**ers - not me anyway - I was a silly bu**er and bought wheels that didn't fit.

Its called learning by experience - and I'm happy to share that, as are most folks on here despite the ****-taking - that's what this forum is all about - helping each other.

Some peeps change their brake pads only to find the wheels they took oft don't fit back on due to the less worn pad being wider/propper size. Then we have to tell them why.

I think they change the wheels to alloy then sell the Freelander. New owner with part worn pads won't know until they get the pads changed.
