Hi all,

I went to a car dealers earlier on today to look at another car when i saw a 1.8i millenium Freelander. Its a W Reg, with 68,000 on the clock. I have had a look through the forum and i have found mixed reviews about this. I have read that the gasket goes quite easily, is this true, or is it just a handful of people who have had this

Does anyone have any advice regarding this car?

Cheers in advance

Matt

dont do it m8 unless you got pots of cash to throw at it and a second car for all the time it will be off the road ..imo ,get a disco .

wafty

When you say dont buy it, what sort of things would i expect to go wrong. Im only saying this as i like the design of the car, i dont really like the look of the disco. Or can anyone recommend another kind of 4x4 which is quite similar in shape to the freelander.

have yu bothered to look on this forum?

no - on second thoughts yu obviously havent - so good luck to ya - yu go buy it and tell us how you found it.

dunt be so harsh MHM...

the 1.8 petrol has a design fault, although LR wont admit it.

the HGF is a case of when not if!

HGF has been known to strike soon after repair!!!

take heed of what we tell yer!

you dunt say ow much its at but try an find a doozle one for your budget, preferably a TD4.

if you must buy a petrol 'un get the best warrenty and recovery you can!

good look!

Do both the 1.8 and 2.5 versions both have problems or is it just the 1.8 one.

Cheers

yep, fraid so. The 2.5 costs even more to repair. If you are paying for the FULL works (cylinder liners aswell as gasket) you are looking at paying a garage £1500 for the 1.8. If you are having just the gasket done then £450-£800 is about the norm.

Go for a TD4 as andytd4auto advises. Others to look at are the Toyota RAV4 (00-06 model) though they hold their value, possibly a Honda CR-V, Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin, Suzuki Grand Vitara they're all similar sized. I personally rate the RAV4 & TD4 but it all depends on use. I only need 4 wheel drive for icy semi-rural roads in winter not out & out off roading so a Discovery or Range Rover for me would be overkill.

Likewise, I bought the car new based on its Design, by Gerry McGovern, now head of LR design.
Dont buy a FL unless you are prepared to get your hands dirty. Its really an enthusiasts engine, revvy and loads of power at the top end. Drinks petrol when you drive hard 20mpg,
If you want reliability, Vitara (low box) or an X-Trail (2wd/4wd)

Go to the freelander section ffs.

Hi again,

Sorry if i am asking obvious questions but is the td4 the diesel version of the freelander then. If so this this still have all the design faults of the petrol one. And Secondly, does this have any other faults i should be wary of.

Cheers in advance

Matt

there are 2 doozil freelanders - the early ones used the Xedi engine - the later ones the TD4 injun - both appear to be good reliable motors ( a few issues like colapsing turbo hoses, but nutting major. But all hippoos suffer the usual design faults with VCU, rear diff mounts, cracking chassis/rear subframe. Its yo money the TD4 is the best of the bunch - it depends wot yo want to use it for - if its serious off roading - go fur a disco or deepender - if its a posemobile then any SUV will do - i changed my Hippoo (KV6) for an X-T - much better build quality and bigger boot.

go buy a airfix model pref aged 1 to 3 an then wen you know what the ferk an engine is, tats ENGINE not injun kin come back OR save your sponds and jus by a volvo.
