Hi, I am considering purchasing a Freelander, I want diesel and 5 doors and looking for around a year 2000.

Any advice on what to look for, good ones and bad, known mechanical faults, rust areas etc and what sort of price range.

Many thanks in advance

Only advice I can give is - Look forward to an empty bank account and then good times and then an empty bank account and then good times...................and on, and on, and

As with any purchase, full service history with regular oil changes listed.

Everything you need to know about buying a Freelander is contained here. 2001 and onwards tend to be the better engineered ones, but they all have the same largely predictable issues which can be more or less avoided with proper maintainance :).

Welcome, and let us know how your hunt goes.

Will.

my mate has one, he drove it once (the day he bought it) it then broke and has sat on his drive for the last year and a half

I'm guessing he didn't read Hippo's buying advise fred then ?

Just to top that, the previous owner of mine got sick of it when the exhaust "broke" - it sat for seven months before he sold it to me for less than peanuts. I mean literally, a bag of salted peanuts would have cost me more. A few days buried in a Hayne's manual, some furious forum typing, some spanner bashing, a full service and a new exhaust manifold later and I drove it home and it's been getting better each day since.

It's all about your attitude.

same here, mine cost 380 pds, but needed a few little jobs that had niggled my mate for months, so he sold it to me, look around you can find a bargain,

I don't know about birdman but I had absolutely zero experience with mechanics before I owned this car, it's been a crash course but an enjoyable one. Very few cars have a knowlege base like this forum, there's just no better place to get info about your landy than here and there's almost no problem we haven't seen before :). So now I don't have to pay garages for servicing and repairs, saves ALOT of money :D!

Will.
