burning smell

Hi i have a freelander petrol and for the last two days when i turn off the engine and get out there is a burning smell coming from the front of the car. It smells like burning rubber/plastic i have had a look in the engine and cant see anything. Has anyone had the same or any ideas what it could be. thanks

could be fuel burning heater, can get quite smelly, is it cold where you live atm?

Do the petrol models have a fuel burning heater?

Worth checking your coolant hoses are in good condition and no wiring is chaffing against the hot coolant pipes and melting.

If the coolant pipes are hot enough to melt wiring, the hippo is ****ed fer sure.

Webasto do make a petrol version of the Thermo Top fbh which was an expensive option on the Freelander 1 but I've never heard of anyone actually having one fitted.

:lol: I was thinking of the metal coolant pipe on the 1.8 engine that runs around the back of the engine

Hi,
I'd suggest checking a few things...

1) Can you see oil anywhere where it shouldn't be? (If you have oil leaking onto anything that gets hot it could produce a burning smell)
2) Crawl underneath and check that you haven't done what my wife did in her car a while back... She had parked at a supermarket and a plastic bag must have been blown by the wind underneath the car. As she had been driving - the exhaust was hot and it stuck there emitting a burning smell whenever the car was used until we found out what it was and scraped it off.

Just joined this site and saw your thread. I have a Freelander 2 GS TD4 just under 1 year old. I have noticed same smell. Not all the time but occasionally. I rang Landrover this morning and they think it could be the Fuel Burning Heater. I did not know I had one but was told you can hear the motor after the engine is turned off. Apparently it cuts in when temperature drops below a certain temp, I think 5 degrees. They told me not to worry!!!!!!!!!! Hope this helps.

me neither, sometimes i have a smell in the car when it is warm, which i did today it smells like aniseed, i can not figure it out, but on the way back i did not notice it .

Do you have a pipe coming out the passengers side , front bumper

make sure a cat hasn't had a kip under the engine

i thought the fl2's had an electrical heater, not a fuel burning one

Check the sump guard thing that's plastic and it's really close to the exhaust!

Mine was leaking a bit of oil ages ago (sorted now) and it was holding on the plastic right under the exhaust. One day the bloody thing was smoking like mad! Ripped the bloody thing off and sorted the leak!

Now time for a proper sump guard!
