I just had a call from my missus who is being driven around today by my son in my 99 Freelander. They have broken down and she tells me the clutch has gone. Upon closer inspection it would appear that the bracket that holds the slave cylinder in place has broken. Does anyone know how difficult/easy the repair will be? I am at work and cannot get away to look for myself.

Hi mate, the bracket is an easy bolt off bolt new one on parts, as long as the slave cylinder wasn't damaged should be a 20min job with sockets and spammers. Readily available on eBay for around £8.00, if the slave cylinder has been damaged the you have to replace the slave and master as they come ready plumbed as one piece and costs around £120. Good luck.

to replace the braket just a matter of bolts to replace the the master cylinder and slave (one unit) at the drivers end unclip the rod of the master cylinder off the foot peddle then turn clock wise 90 degrees then pull out on the other end there is a half circle clip just pull off and then you have the unit undone and if it is broken just replace if the slave has just come off replace the plate then put slave back on do not do like my wife did with hers is press the clutch while it is of the plate, her plate broke and she pulled the clutch pedel back up and pressed it again AAAAAAHG.

As a foot note the bracket was broken which allowed the slave cylinder to come off which in turn allowed the piston to come compretely out of the cylinder. So, a new bracket, £8.00 and a new slave master assembly at £65.00. The point is is that the bracket had obviously been failing for some time as before it actually broke it had become extremely distorted which meant that for some time the actual 'bite' point of the clutch pedal was very close to the floor. It might be worthwhile for anybody who thinks their clutch is on the way out to check this bracket out because the clutch on mine is so improved it feels like different car.

I replaced my wifes clutch system a few years ago it always seamed low when the last episode happen the clutch is now right, must have been a dogey one
