Hi,

Does anyone know why my new brakes are squealing/squeaking when applied at slow speed? I have fitted new cylinders and shoes all round, its passed its MOT and they are embarrasingly noisy, only when wet weather though!

Please help.

If you have a stupid comment to make, then dont bother as this is not too helpful!!!

If you have a productive comment to make then I will greatley appreciate it.

Cheers

Give them a chance to bed in - the shoes have to wear to fit the drums. If they still squeal in a couple of months try chamfering off the leading edges of the shoes.

a smear of grease on the contact between shoe and piston, likewise between
shoe and lower pivot.

copperslip works best doesn't it? had the same problem with my IIa a few years ago just b4 i sold it, put copperslip on all relevent parts, an filed the leading edge, an they worked fine with no squealing at all (even in the we)

Superb info fellas, i greatly appreciate the help; just didnt wanna go putting any lube on the brakes and them not work!!! :$
This would not have been so good!

Thing is I am seriously considering selling this on, but want too make sure they do not squeal!

yeah copper slip is better, but grease would do. kind of thought people would know what grease was and would just frown at a silly word like "copperslip" :D

oh and for the wd40 post-
you know its a penetrating fluid and not a lubricant?
works initially as it penetrates, but when it dries up, you loose all lube.
ever wondered why you have to go back to wd it again? and again? and.....

This is one of the most important things to do.

It's the stupid comments that make this forum, if you don't like it feel free to **** off.

GT85 is a good lube, used to use that on me mountain bikes (cross country and trials) then tried muc off stuff, ther good lubes anorl, altho on me trials bike i used bitchamin roofing tar that had gone hard on the rims to make the brake extra sticky (and extra squeaky)

I use copperslip or Castrol LM depending on which one I haven't used up - both seem to work. WD40 is a mix of water repelling solvents and various mineral oils. Yes, it will leave a lubricant behind but it's fairly lightweight so it's no substitute for grease or thicker oil.
