Black smoke

Hi has anyone got any answers for this one, my partners td4 2001 has suddenly started to emmitt large plumes of black smoke it mainly happens when going up hills or when pulling away, causing cars behind to disappear while this is a good thing at times it could be a recipe for disaster. Is this one going to be an easy fix.

ditto that one. . . . . thar is three

Had exactly the same prob with mine few weeks back. It was the intercooler pipe. Cost me £12 and took 10 mins to fix. or you could always use a roll of tape as a temp repair, thats what i did and it lasted from lake district back to nottm befor i repaired it properly. If it helps a pic is attached. have a look for splits in it and tiny bit of oil coming out maybe?

Thanks everyone for the replies found a 2in split in pipe, now that the black smoke has cleared from over cumbria i feel a little more happy.
