i had a rocker brake on my 300 tdi so i checked the timing and the cam was out one tooth, so i replaced the cambelt, rockers and push rods, it starts on the button but sounds like its running on 3 cylinders.
on acceleration theres lots of black smoke and power loss, ive removed the head and all looked ok so i tested the valves with petrol and no leaks.
the pistons look ok some valve indents on the top nothing major
any ideas where to go from here?

Could be the injector pump timing retarded,or a few other things. Are you sure you timed the pump accurately?Tell us more about when the rocker broke? Was it in normal use or after rebuild etc.?:)

i had the cambelt replaced at christmas by a garage then 2 days after a rocker snapped so they checked the timing and said it was ok, they put a new rocker on i was never happy with it after the cambelt changed so when the rocker broke i thought i would do it myself and got a manul and timing kit, thats when i found out the cam was out by one tooth it had 3 bent puch rods.
it was always a little smokey but ne where near as much as now
its got 198k miles on clock
im hoping to get the head back on tomorrow

:(That sounds bad and i hope you got some money out of them but it does sound like the pump timing could be an issue. The internal timing of the pump should be ok and the pulley is located by a key.Ther are pointers and punch marks toalign everything and the fine adjustment is done by turning the pump body. There may be marks on the pump flange but not always visible.tbhb i usually set it by ear/trial and error if there arent good marks. Its not difficult if you take it step by step.Tell us where you are and someone might help if needed.:)

Thinking about it you probably havent removed the pump so you just need to set up the engine and line up all the pointers and marks on the pulleys. Then put on the belt and adjust:)Best of luck, keep us posted;)

it turnt out to be a bent tapit the top of the tapit guide where the locating screw goes through had snapped off so the guide was moving up and down its got its power back like it was before i'd ever had the cam belt changed
