bhp increase question

I would have have thought that with a re-map the power would have come in earlier.

I changed the MAF and fitted a Synergy and now the donkey I had before, has been reincarnated into a whole team of thoroughbreds. :D

Switchable to a team of Clydesdales on demand! :rolleyes:

That's enough horse-talk.

It all depends what fuelling message the ECU sends and when the turbo comes in.

Even with the extra 'oomph' I get better mpg - but the turbo comes in much earlier about 1750rpm and really gets going around 2000rpm.

Singvogel.

I know its diverting the thread a bit with this but.

The remap was done by the previous owner and by a local reputable firm.
Having not driven the car before the mapping I can`t really comment on the difference.
Also as I have not driven any others I don`t have a benchmark.
Yesterday(hot day,aircon on) I pulled away up hill and it was as if I had the handbrake on.
It would be nice to hire a 4 wheel drive rolling road for an hour and look at the graphs.
Or maybe a get together with other freelander owners(not them rough tratter drivers) to compare notes.

Hope this make sense,I have just been outside changing the oil and crankcase breather and have got sunburn and gravel rash.:deadhorse:

how old is the m.a.f. sensor ?

I do suspect the maff but other than the slow pickup,the car drives fine with
plenty of performance.Starts well and is smooth.
I only use quality diesel(Shell or Esso)

Also £170 for a maf is a lot to spend if it might just be the remap.
I would just like a bit more bottom and a bit less top(same with women)

you refering to a rover-ron box .. the 'synergy' ?

ok by me .. if you'd like a 'synergy' demo .. ( manual gears )
i'm not too far from lincs. .. 'n don't mind a drive down your way
( used to go to cadwell park for the classic bike races .. been a while though )
p.m. me if you want ..

aiming to change my m.a.f. in the next few days
the 'pfbrg' type came with the synergy .. but i'm still using the original 'bosch' ..
decided now to change it .. 'n mabye try cleaning it ..
gotta find where i stashed the pfbrg m.a.f. first .. it's in this room somewhere :)

I've driven quite a few Freelanders and E46 BMW 320Ds (my grandson has one) and without the Synergy I must admit the TD4 is a bit sluggish. A classic case of de-tuning a very capable engine.

With a Synergy on Nr 8 and a Pierburg MAF the Freelander is much more lively and goes like the proverbial 'Sh*t off a Shovel) easily out accelerating the 320D from say 40 to 60mph.

If you search for our friend rhodie's posts from a few months back you'll get a set of figures for various settings on a synergy as well as the standard spec. I tried my own test runs and can agree with what he found.

You might find them an interesting comparison with yours.

Thanks for the replies chaps.
I am pretty sure the maf is the problem.I think its been on its way out for a while,Just thought is was a case of there all like that.

While I was out today,first off very hot 28 degrees struggled up to 3000 rpm.
Bit of a thunder storm and a temperature drop much better.
Will have to decide whether to replace with a Bosch(after disconnecting test) or going down the synergy and Pierburg route.

Just wondering how will my remap react with it.

Thanks for the offer hd3,I will probably take you up on that.
I can hear Cadwell from where I am.

hi Chaps,

just to hijack your thread, i'm selling my synergy 2a if anyone wants to make me a (sensible) offer. Just taken it off tonight after "doing a deal" on a new motor, sadly my Freelandering days are over. Boo. Pm me if interested. Thanks and apologies for the hijack again.

Just wondering how will my remap react with it.

some have been known to do both ..
but i think that's via visiting rover-rons establishment ..
i think it's a sister company that does the remaps .. with the 'synergy' parameters in mind i'm assuming

as far as i know .. tuning boxs connected to the fuel-rail pressure sensor
alter the rail pressure for a given right-foot-pedal position ..
any weak points in the fuel system will probably show up
so all that has to be in good shape to start with ..

i rekon any extra wear 'n tear due to adding more rail pressure
be down to one's right foot :))
( and preventative maintainance via use of quality fuels etc etc )

i've no idea what adding one to a 3rd party remap might do ..
i'd be afraid it might overload some component .. leading to a failure
or cause m.o.t. failing via overfueling / smoke particles ..

~~~~~
maybe rover-rons 'mafam' on it's own would be an advantage
together with your current remap
( that's the gizmo that compensates for m.a.f. aging / degrading signal
( i think it Might let you use the pbrg-m.a.f. as well .. not sure about that without revisting his site pages )
~~~~~

er .. one thing ..

IF .. you've not allready done so ..

an EGR bypass/delete would be worthwhile .. simple to do and doesn't cost much
could very well be all that's needed for your pre-2500 rev
my mpg jumped from 33 to 39 with that
( was the first mod. i did ) .. engine pulled better from lower revs as well ..

( although if the vehicle has been re-mapped ..
( would have thought an egr bypass would have been done as well

~~~~~
i get 40 to 45 mpg with the synergy added ..
( .. on any 'setting' i've selected .. )
rpm wise i tend to be very conservative ..
although once in a while giving it a bit of 'exercise' up a long hill .. :)
