I have acquired a set of 5.5 Defender steel (tubeless) rims and have a set of BFG 265 75 R16 MTs hanging around. Is it possible/legal to fit the BFGs to the Defender rims and them fit them to a SWB Series III?

Cheers,

Ian.

I have absolutely no idea what 5.5 Defender steel (tubeless) rims are. Always thought it were the tyre what was tubeless.

As fer yr Big Friendly Giants as long as yr 5.5 whatevers measure 16 inches beed diametre they'll fit.

Not sure why they'd by illegal, more likely to be ill advised n less yr used to the lack of traction of MT's on the road.

I think it is to do with the width between the rims (being 5.5"). I've spotted a few threads that state the max size tyre to go for is 235 85 R16 for this size rim but I want to be sure before moving forward and trying to fit them or sell the rims.

Cheers for the advice

Yh yr right I was being rude about the tubeless bit I've got 235x85's on my Defender rims with no issues.

Check out tyre calculator but I think you'll find 265's are gonna be too wide for yr 5.5 inch wide wheels. They'll fit yes but they're too wide.

Tubed and tubeless rims are different. Older landy rims are riveted together and aren't necessarily airtight - they also don't have the appropriate profile to properly grip and seal a tubeless tyre.

I have seen series with 265 on them but didnt take too much notice of the size (width) of the rim.

Really will 5.5 tubeless rims fit 265 75 R16s or do i need to think of getting some 6.5 rims?

Is the offset diferent between the riveted ones (original series) and the welded (defender) ones?

Like I said they will fit whether they're safe or not is another question.

My 235's are on standard 5.5 rims and they bulge nearly enough to pop off the rims at 15psi.

So I guess the choice is always keep em at they're normal pressure, get wider rims or different tyres.

Probably as there is a difference in series offset.

Think I've confused myself a bit so to recap

5.5 I think refers to the offset

This has opened one hell of a can of worms with no real sensible or definitive answer.

What I've found is

The standard wheel rims for the 88in Series Land Rover are not the same as for 109in wheel base version, the distance between the inside of the rim flanges (i.e. what the outer edges of the tyre beads will push against) is 5.0 inches on the SWB rim and 5.5 inches on the LWB rim.

SWB, Lightweight etc..5" wide, 5" offset
LWB, 90/110....5.5" wide, 4.75" offset
2A FC, Wolf, 1Tonne....6.5" wide, 4.5" offset
2B FC....6.5" wide, 4" offset
TD5 standard rim I think is 6" wide with 5.5inches offset

now I'm confused.com

265/75R16 will not go on a 5.5J rim, you'll need a 7J rim such as Discovery 1 Steels.
They'll fit without problems.

found the following link that lets you compare tyre sizes and gives you a pictorial representation as well:
