iirc whilst you don't get the full t&c until after, things like the cooling off period and cancellation charges are terms that thay have to tell you on the phone when you take out the policy, trouble is for me I switch into snooze mode whilst they go through the stuff they have to go through.

as they record the calls - no idea how long they have to keep the recordings for - if they haven't told you the terms you should have a good case.

if I was buying a car I would get the quotes etc then only put it in force at the point of sale

Surely garbled t's & c's cant change consumer law no matter what they say. Company policy is worthless if its illegal. Its like saying you will agree to murder your spouse if payments are not honored. Total bunkum.

I think a lot of guff is threatened in so many industries that people seem to accept it as binding. Bit like the TV licence. No other company in the world can attempt to fine you for not paying a subscription. But is it actually legally binding.

Good news!

but

only half a story

Has the charge been dropped for every customer in the same boat
or did you get your money back as a sort of hush money?
Just tried to change from my Landy to an old ford ranger only wanted it for a while was quoted _£145 on top of the £283 I'm already paying so cancelled got I online fully comp £186 thought I was on a winner after wouldn't give new company details of my 11 years ncd managed to sort it out with New comp.then rang AF to find out why turns out I've been stung for £100 cancellation fee. Never again will hunt around on here before I insure Landry again

May I ask was it AF wanting to charge £100 to cancel?

the £100 probably includes £25 for them :D

found out the other day some of these brokers cream off some of any refund you are due if you cancel early :D

if you have a telematics box early cancellation can include a fee of at least £80

I've cancelled before and an admin charge was taken from the refund. Also tried to forget to refund the higher amount due to number of days used/left until reminded.

I do believe it's illegal to insure something that doesn't belong to you, like I could insure you and have someone kill you, thats the reason you cannot/and is not allowed, ring the insurance ombudsman, they will charge the insurance company £450 right off the bat, just for opening a case!
