10 months ago my local LR dealer sold me a battery for my Disco with a CCA of 580A. It has always struggled like hell to fire up the beast and now the weather is getting colder she just doesn't crank over quickly enough unless jumped from my transit.

What is the best / biggest battery that will fit into a Disco 1?

I have seen a Numax with 1000A CCA but no idea if it will fit in the battery tray. I guess there must be folks on here that have had the same issue and can suggest a particular battery?

Supprised at that, as that is the the size your disco left the factory with, no doubt that's the minimum CCA and some mechanical wear over the years has taken it's toll. :(

This link has lots of info on batteries, sizes, CCAs etc. http://www.performancebatteries.co.uk/

Just spoken to the dealer and they say that they recommend these and have done for years. It's actually 590CCA. They have said that if I take it in they will deep charge it overnight and replace if faulty. He suggested it could be a lazy starter but surely it would still be 'lazy' when jumped off the transit? When I jumped it, she cranked over quickly and fired up nicely.

Good call on the earth leads.
I was told when I bought mine that it had a modified battery tray.
It has a very large battery with a CCA of 950.

Check your earth lead form starter to chassis, mine has just started playing up again although it is fitted with 2 850cca batteries, i had a problem last year with starting and thought I had cured it by replacing the battery negative lead as the join on the inner wing was loose which at the time cured it but had a problem starting over the lasT few days and rev counter was erratic too, turns out it was the earth from starter.
