So, I got to the bottom of my recent sudden starting problem. It would seem that my battery has decided not to hold a charge anymore. Charged it up to a full charge. It gave 13.5 volts. Left it in the garage overnight not connected to anything. It’s down to 10.5v. Water levels are fine, so obviously a dead cell. :(

This puts me in a bit of a dilemma. I’ve been meaning to spit charge it for a while now. I’ve got everything I need to do so, just haven’t gotten round to buying a second battery.

The battery that has now died is a Numax HGV battery, but is clearly very old. Quite large in size compared to normal car batteries. Question is, do I replace it with the same thing (I like the idea of an over-sized battery for those cold mornings) or do I go for two smaller ones to make fitting them in the battery box easier?

Also, the second battery, I’d quite like to winch from it (occasional use only). So I guess a deep cycle leisure battery wouldn’t really be suitable. Or is there a reasonably priced option to do both jobs. The bumpf for those Optima thingys suggests they do both. But I can’t really afford those prices right now.

Sorry, I know this is one of those newbie ‘what battery shall I get’ questions that gets done to death on here. But you guys were so right on my newbie ‘what tyres shall I get’ question. :D:eek:

A decent 750CCA battery will be fine for starting, doesnt need to be anything special. For the second battery my advice is the NUMAX 1000CCA marine battery, its a deep cycle starting battery and ideal for running the extras off and gives the winch the power it will want.

I am running an Optima Redtop and a Numax, had no issues at all, the Numax allows me to do 3 full cable winches, possibly more but I was out of the mud on the third so didnt need to do more, I did do about another 4 winches over that day though and it didnt struggle at all...

that's the same Numax battery I bought after recommendations on here...

It really made a difference in the starting speed too..cranks over and starts instantly now...

Next day delivery, well packed and the battery has an auxiliary connector for +ve & -Ve too which helps.

Go for it I reckon !

Yep, put the order in earlier. I got the dispatch notification about ten minutes later. Should be here tomorrow. :)

Is that your question on the web page and are you buying two:hippie:

No, that was already there.

And yes. I definitely need one as my landy is currently without a battery, and as im paying shipping costs anyway i might as well get two and finally do the long awaited split charge.

I do like the fact that question is on there and that the battery has a picture of a landy winching on it. If i ever have to have the argument that I've killed a battery whilst winching, I'll be able to say that's exactly what it's designed for, look at the picture on it.

I try to avoid Numax batteries like the plague. They are the battery equivelent of Britpart.

Numax are fine, I have used them for many years, I have supplied them before with no problems, I know plenty of people that use them and there are no more issues with these than any other manufacturer. Numax are a budget battery, if you want premium go spend £200 on an Optima, If you want VFM then Numax are possibly the best around, at the end of the day no batteries are perfect, even the best have faulty ones

My boss told me the same thing when I advised him against us selling them. After we were inundated with come backs within a year we have funnily enough stopped selling em. I have a brand new numax 017 battery sat around. After leaving the urn on in my landy I killed the Bosch 019 battery I have had for the last 8 years. The numax battery was fitted and was flat (it had only been stood for a couple of months). I ended up fitting the optima yellow top I had that had been sat idle for 18 months. It fired the landy straight up with no problems. After attempting to charge the numax and finding it was knackered I have decided to weigh it in as scrap.

Thats fair enough, we have supplied them for over ten years with no real issues, we stock Numax, Unipart and Banners as well as Optimas on order basis, get no more issues with the Numax than any others, a couple of returns over the year maybe at most. Numax are jsut a rebrander I believe so maybe at that time it was a bad manufacturer??

I would still recommend them though as a budget battery, my personal one has been solid and so has alot of other peoples on here. Mind you I still recommend Britpart if people want budget parts, the clue is in the 'budget' bit, expectations an all that...
