Axle Stands

I bought my axle/vehicle stands when I started work on my 'project in the day' XJ Daimler Sovereign. They're a seriously heavy and low vehicle, so bought a pair of 3.5t stands...I preferred to err on the side of caution. The same stands have held up my Disco n Jeep, mates Patrols, Land Cruisers and Pajero's without issue, so if you can get heavier ones then why not? There's like $5-10 difference between a 2-3.5t pair, so it seemed a no-brainer decision, especially when you're the sucker laying under a couple of tonne of vehicle. ;)

Bingo.

Your going to risk injury or damage to your vehicle for the sake of twenty quid?

Machine Mart do some 750mm tall ones with a SWL of 8 ton. Ok, so the SWL is a bit of an overkill, but they do get the vehicle nice and high for when your working underneath.

The only downside is that they are £82 a pair. :(

..... but Machine Mart also do some 12 ton rated ones which are nearly 1000mm tall, for not much more money

Now you're in perfect safety......doesn't worth any heavy-er then those u bought, I have 2t ones and I have no fear..........considering that a 2t car has just 500kg/wheel....or /stand;)

True to all you say, but if there's a $5-10 difference to have a far more hardcore kit, like you wouldn't do the same! Sure 2t is sufficient for purposes, but like others have said, I'd rather not play the tight-ass card for the sake of a little bit more extra peace of mind...esp when you're the one laying under said vehicle. Btw $10 here is 17 Pounds, so if you're not willing to spend that difference you're a chump mate. It's half of fark-all if you're going to be doing lots of work. ;)

I sure would spend it but I use the stands just for small works at the hub, swivels or breaks.......for the bigger ones I use the gully which i have in the garage:D

Meh...you're still better off doing as I and other suggest. If it were a few hundred $'s I'd understand, but for the sake of $'s you can count on one hand, that makes you a tightarse. There will be a time when you regret not spending 20mins of wages to ensure your safety. ;)

but you only need something that can take just over half a ton anyway, so a 2 tonne stand is more than enough, why the hell would you waste money on something that was even more of a heavy duty product than you need

little stands have little bases - big stands have BIG bases

am sure you can figure out why a BIG stand is going to be safer

Sean's got it in one! Base security is a MASSIVE reason alone...the smaller capacity stands don't have much of a base if things go pear-shaped. It's just common sense that something made for more tolerances will do a better job. :D

V8, there's no wastage of $'s...I regularly put heavier vehicles than my own on them, even for doing simple stuff like wheel rotations. I prefer to buy a better quality or standard item than 'what will get me by for now', as it always works out cheaper and better in the long-run. Buy cheap, expect it to break and have to replace it...better off going for the good gear in the first place. ;)
