Hi guys,
I've searched the forum for 2 weeks before asking you all for advice....
I have an 1984 90 which I want to put boosts on and rear disks (yes it's another one of those questions).
I've still yet to find a definitive answer as to why boosts with centre caps won't fit without adaptors.

  • Is it because the drive member is deeper than the later models?
  • What year did the hubs ichange - 94 300tdi by my research?
  • I'm considering swapping the axles for a set of TD5s CW rad arms as I believe this a straight swap, Am I correct?
  • Mine currently has sailsburys on it which I believe are far more robust that later models. Is this correct and why?
  • If I wanted to keep the sailsburys can I swap the hubs for the later type? Has anyone done this?
  • When I read about 10 and 24spline what are you guys referring to? Is this the shaft the hub sits on and what years had what splines?
All help appreciated!
Cheers

Sell the Sailsbury and Buy either TD5 or 300tdi Defender or Discovery Axle's.
Disk brakes came in on the last 200tdi Defenders late 1993 mine was registered early 1994 and came with rear Disk's.
10 splines are the amount of splines on the halfshafts/diff, 24 splines are from 300tdi they are thicker with obviously more splines

The alloys foul the drum brake drum. If you want to keep a Salisbury (yes they are stronger) you will have to get a disc version, you can't easily convert your drum type. As above, a rear axle from a later model will be a fairly straight swap.

You can quite easily convert a Salisbury rear to disc brakes. There are some very good write ups including parts list available (Link1, link2, link3). I have done this conversion myself and it is very straight forward to do.
However, if you have a 90 it should not have a Salisbury rear axle, I thought they were only fitted to the larger 110's and 129's. If this is the case then I do not know how easy it is to convert but you do have the option of fitting a discovery axle as the weight rating of the axle will be fine for a 90.

Depends on what you consider to be easy of course. It is unusual to have a 90 with a Salisbury rear axle though. Maybe pop a photo up here to confirm?
