hi guys 1997 discovery automatic is there a filter in the box and if so is it in the sump of the gearbox were you drain the oil out of. please

Same here. Dropped the oil and changed it, with no success. Dropped the oil again and cleaned the filter, was better for a while. ripped the oil and put a new filter in. Took it for a good run then checked the level and had to put lads more in. Now perfect. Three lessons...filter is very fine and has to be changed. Will need a few changes to get all old oil out. You have to fill it, then come back and top it up afterwards. Filters are about a tender on ebay, including gasket etc. having done it, I would say just drop the oil twice, then the third time change the filter, as you won't have all the crap out until then and will just block the new filter. It's a job you really need to do on a ramp!

If the box suffers flaring on shifts or rough changes, add some Lucas Transmission Fix. It's one snake oil that works. (more often than not:))

Been looking at changing my gear box oil, so how much oil will you realistically need to do it 3 times, and the 3rd time changing the filter?

Also how do you fill up the gearbox

Between 5 & 6 litres each time. Use the oil specified in the handbook, usually Dexron IID or Dexron III, NOT the newer ones.
You fill either via the dip stick if fitted or the filler plug, in which case you need a pump, I use a cheap garden sprayer with the lance removed.
Fill until the oil runs out then fil more with the engine cold and idling after moving the stick slowly through all gear positions and back to P or N.
