Hi

I have a 2001 P38 4.6 V8 Automatic. Last night I got in the car and put it in reverse when something broke and the spring loaded catch under the gear lever has gone slack. I cannot now change gear or even get it out of reverse.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can do about this? There is a screw on the front of the gear lever and I am wondering if I can take that off and see what the problem is but I don't want to make matters worse.

Any advice would be very much appreciated!!

Nick

Thanks Wammers just needed the confidence. I took the gear handle off and it the plastic leaver under the handle had snapped inside. I can now drive it without a handle until I get a replacement.

Any idea if I will have to buy a full handle or can I replace the plastic leaver?

Thanks again

It's a rare failure so you'll find that a decent breaker will sell you a basic lever for very few beer tokens. It's the coloured leather and wood ones that cost a fortune.

That's the problem it's a beige leather one. I saw a black leather one for 200 quid so I imagine it's going to be pricey :(

Ouch, that's got to worth spending a bit of time on.
Any chance of gluing it with a good two pack?
Or buying a cheapo and swapping bits?

Hi , what i did was super glue the pieces together and then fill in the back with a metal putty. seamed to do the trick. Or If you get a normal black (cheap) knob from the breakers, the lifter mech does come out of the knob (with a pin and a spring) - so you should be able to swap it.
