Now I may be thick but owners handbook seems a bit vague.
It says FL has 5 forward gears, having trouble counting 5 in auto.
In sports using tiptronic there is only 4.
In P4 only 4 obviously) but that would indicate that there are 5 forward.
Can an intelligent person clear this up.

Also, when cold autobox takes forever and upto 3000rpm to change up, is that normal.
Had autos for years.

they are slower when cold, in changing up and down

the 3,000 revs seems high though, have never really looked at every gear and what the revs are , but they change. ery smoothly and quietly

u can select 4 gears, but there is 5 ,

has the automatic gearbox oil all been done etc , sorry can't remember if I asked before , lol

hope that helps abit,is always strange when u go i to another car and not know if it's normal or faulty

there is a massive amount of info on here, do a search in the top rh corner of this site

There are 5 gears but first is almost never used. In tiptronic mode you can see what gear you are in the dash display - at least you can on a freelander 1.

My experiences is only with TD4 freelander '1s' and they do change up around 3000 in 'grandad' mode ...they like to keep revs around 2500-3500 IME. In sport mode they will if floored rev to the redline.

If the engine is reluctant to rev on the TD4 that seems to usually be a fuel feed issue - lack of fuel will limit power or of accompanied by black smoke/whistling, split turbo hose.

there are definitely 5, and you can get all 5 in tiptronic.

there may be a bit of confusion though, read somewhere that it usually pulls away in 2nd in full auto unless kicked down hard from standstill.

And don't forget the torque converter will lock up in 5th (and I think lower gears?) once you are on a steady throttle, you will see the revs drop by around 300 or so.

It will pull away in first but yer probably won't notice as it soon changes up. It can pull away in 2nd if circumstances are right. If turning right in a normal width residential road from stand still at a junction it will change up just as the front of the car crosses the white lines in the middle of the road.

when stationary put the auto in D
then move the selector right to sport mode
then pull the lever back twice
yer now in 1st gear manual mode (steptronic)
drive away slowly and when revs start to increase move the lever forward fully then let go
yer now in second gear
continue this pattern until yer in 5th gear, as yer goes faster
move the lever left to go back to auto mode D

Thanks guys,
I've taken to using steptronic when cold to reduce revving till it warms up. I haven't got it to show 5th though, which I thought it would at 50mph.
Not using 1st in auto would explain why I'm only counting 4 changes.
I did ask Landy fella about gearbox oil, he said at 11500 it will be ok.
I am quickly discovering that FL really are unique in their quirky ways.
Much appreciated, as always

Drive it at 60mph and try for 5th gear then.

It's probably using 1st gear but so smooth yer don't notice.

The warn up issue isn't a problem. LR wants the engine to be warm. My v6 ticks over at 1200 revs when first started when cold. It drops when warm to about 700.

Auto box oil change every 60,000 miles.

It will start off in 2nd if you switch to steptronic.

My auto is very sluggish when cold, and for about 1 mile will not change up till around 2500/3000 rpm.

When warm I can get mine into 5th at around 42. It will then hang in there to about 38 before dropping to 4th.

But my engine is remapped.....

I had a play with the auto tonight in my v6.

Drive pulls away in first.
Drive sport pulls away in first.
Both the above happen if you stop in that mode, then pull away from stationary.

Steptronic will pull away in first if you pull the lever back when in sport, to display first on the dash, when stationary.
Steptronic will pull away in second if you push the lever forwards when in sport, to display second on the dash, when stationary.

Pulling away in second is not good for the clutches. FL2's had problems with that due to a fault causing them to pull away in second.

As said above, it seems box is set to 2nd gear automaticaly in steptronic.
The range between 1st and 2nd is tiny.

When in steptronic keep pulling the level back until the dash displays 1. Lean out the window and pull away to hear the 1st to 2nd change.
