Hi Jay, I just seen your post, the site seemed to be missbehaving earlier but anyway, oil changes, yes, what about them??

Gearbox, transfer box and axles, basically all the same approach.

1. Check the refill/level plugs will come undone BEFORE you undo the drain plugs,

2. Go for a run to warm up the oils;

3. In turn empty each assy, leaving a reasonable time to drain it all out, refit drain plug and using a pump device as per picture, pump in the new oil;

4. I found the axles were the most noticeable and positive change, so would advise doing them first as a motivator;

5. Next Transfer box, drain and refill plugs are both 1/2 inch drive so I used a socket set ratchet driver, if you have trouble getting them undone use a breaker bar to crack them off. Drain out all the old stuff and using the hand pump, pump in the new oil.
*Tip. If you can buy your new oils in 1 or 2 ltr containers, it makes it easier, when working under the car;

6. Last but not least, the auto gearbox. You should be aware that even though the rated capacity is 9 ltrs, you can only drain between 4 and 5 ltrs, the rest stays in the torque converter. The drain plug on my '98 auto was an allen key type, and you refill through the dipstick tube in the engine bay.

Before starting the oilchange ensure that you KNOW that the oil level in the 'box is correct.

Empty out all the old oil and leave it to drip for quite a while, go have a coffee. When you come back, assuming there is nothing left to empty, refit the drain plug and then measure VERY carefully how much came out. With mine it was 4.3 ltrs.

Look at the oil, is it red or more brown tinge?, Does it have a burnt smell? All these are signs of it not being changed for a long time.

Now to refill. Take out the dipstick and with a funnel starting refilling 1 litr at a time until you have put back in what you took out.

Then go through the standard method of checking the level of the auto box:
1. Start with a cold engine, start the motor;

2. Put your foot firmly on the footbrake and select 1st gear, leave for a couple of secs to take up drive.

3. Then select reverse, all the time keeping your foot on the footbrake, leave a couple of secs to take up drive, then select Park.

4. Now go to the engine bay, clean the dipstick and insert into the dipstick tube to take a level reading. You may find this time it reads high, mine did. Goes for a drive for 5 mins and try again, this time it should be correct.

5. So, ideally, what you should do is do all that again in 3-500 miles to try and get the old stuff out of the torque converter. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way of getting all the oil out at one go - unless you take the gearbox out !!

Also, you should know that there is a filter/oil screen within the autobox and some people feel it's important to change that at the same time. I didn't because it complicates the job and my priority was to get new oil in !!

Hope that is clear, it's very straightforward stuff so long as you have something to get the new oil in - otherwise yer buggered !!:D :D
