Auto gearbox malfunction!

HI guys!!..my 1996 disco 1 300tdi auto gearbox seems to slips and sometimes no drive...plus i cant put the gear on NEUTRAL!!!...can somebody care to explain what might be the problem???....im seriously in trouble now..pls help.tq

check cable on lhs of box is secure were it fastens to box lever and clamp on box mount .drain some oil out and check its not blackish /burnt smelling

Check the autobox oil level - with the engine running.

Thanks James and Biglad...ive check all seems fine...cable ok and the oil is good...but the problem still persists....another bad development is that i cant put her into reverse....sometimes it can ..sometimes it wont.....so now i lay her to rest....now im clueless again...and the worst nightmare already creeping into me....:Cry: anybody pls advice..tq much!

what colour is the oil ,blackish /burnt smelling indicates a clutch pack ,which will entail removing box ,or if valve sticking could just need oil change ,when you say you cant put it in reverse is that lever wont move or stay in correct place or it just doesnt move once selected

Thanks james for ur response....oil is ok..no burnt smell...colour a bit blackish but its normal not that bad....and when i put the lever into reverse....it engage sometimes n doesnt sometimes....;(

blackish is poor as means burnt clutch pack ,reddy brown is normal colour of oil thats been in far too long,presume you mean lever feels right but you cant feel pull from box ,if thats the case it is possible lever/cable not exactly set you can test by holding pawl in lever in and moving lever a little forwards/backwards to see if that position engages better ,or clutch pack b or sticky valve ,clutch pack b could be repaired by competent diyer as only requires front on the box not a strip down

Thanks much james....ive to tow it to the garage 2moro....its gonna be a big job i guess...n biggg money...the one n only landy mechanic here told he gonna check in n out ...but he mention most probably clucth A.....by the way the oil is brownish red...not blackish....tq

clutch A would effect forward motion ,dont forget to put transfer box in neutral for towing
