Can anyone enlighten me as to the reason my Auto gearbox will not select 4th until i have been moving for about 3 or 4 miles.Seems to have started more now it's turned colder.Would this just be due to the fact that the fluid is at a lower temperature and needs to warm up,all other gears seem fine.2000 TD5 ES

Mine don't shift to 4th until i reach 55mph if your about town, that could be the reason! and its certainly more reluctant to shift in cold weather. :( Spose it could need an oil change!

the auto won't go into 4th until you get upto 50+ mph & also wont' go into 4th until it gets to normal operating temp (obviously longer in colder weather)

see this thread

or do a search - there's lots of info on this subject

It's the main reason I chose a manual over an auto - bloody annoying reving away like mad driving about town & plays hell with with your mpg (spend an extra £400 a year on diesel ? - no thanks I'd rather have a manual) ;)

see this thread as well

Thanks again chaps,
seems to be the norm then, although i get straight out on a dual carriageway in the morning so get to 55mph quite soon.Still won't change until warm, after about 3mls,so doing 60mph at 2700rpm.So as you say, costing more in fuel, but have only had her about a month so will have to put up with it.Anyway still glad i bought it as it's the best car i have owned.

Its normal if my '01 V8 is anything to go by. She has always refused to go into 4th until around 50-55 mph. She is also a bit slow to change when winter is upon us. She has done this from new. Hammers any chance of decent fuel consumption and very annoying at 40mph when she could obviously run happily in top. Just another British curio I guess!

I have researched this problem as mine was doing the same but gradually got worse - it ended up sticking in first gear for about 2 miles untill it would change gear at all but once it did change it was mostly fine but sometimes holding going into top - it was the govenor in the box 'sticking' untill sufficient pressure picked up to kick it back to life - i gave the box a flush and a filter change (about £20 for a zf filter kit inc seals and sump gasket from ebay) and now it is faultless

Hi dez had my Td5 about same time as yourself it does exactly the same thing,I just keep the speed to about 50mph till it gets up to temp.

Hi Phil,
Thanks for the reply, looks like we are stuck with this then. I am the same and keep it to 50mph till warm. How are you finding it otherwise,i am very pleased with mine and have just ordered my EGR blanking plate from ebay to carry out the work as recommended by the others on the site.

Hi Dez
I am well pleased with mine:D its been back to have waste gate cleaned/unstuck and air con drains unblocked but nothing major,I am getting about 25mpg average,I used to have a Navara before this and i was expecting the Td5 auto to be a bit sluggish in comparison but not a chance it goes really well.:D I dont think the egr as been done on this, but with it being under warranty i am reluctant to mess just yet.

check the fluid level also, i dont own an auto landy but i do own a trans am with an auto box, if the fluid is low it wont change gear correctly

seems to be abit normal mine hangs slightly in 2nd in cold weather on first run of day but changes ok after that not sure about series 2 disco but on the 300tdi auto the top gear is set as an overdrive gear mine changes to 4th at 51 mph
