Auto Dipstick!

Hello.

Advice please. 1998 dse: The automatic gearbox dipstick on my motor is deformed at the top. The plastic bit appears to have two 'clips' moulded into it for retaining it in the fully inserted position on the tube (the tube having a flaired end, that the clips look as though they hold it in place by clipping over it). My clips are mostly missing. Is there a place I can get a second hand dipstick from.

Allied to the above. If I push the dipstick in the full amount, then go for a drive, the dipstick gets pushed out by about 4ins by, I assume, internal pressure from the gearbox. Is this normal? Also the plastic end appears to be being destroyed by something, it is loosing its shape as though it is melting. As anybody come across anything like this?

The gearbox oil on the dipstick is pinky going on clear, is this a good colour.

Any help would be appreciated.

2nd hand dipstick = breakers, for best price, otherwise stealer's

Your assumption re pressure is right; as hydraulic oil is pressurised it also raises in temperature, and therefore volume, though nothing like described as to melt the top!!

Dip stick will raise under pressure if not retained, this will lessen the internal working pressure and just might be enough to affect g/box operation - try securing top with cable ties etc until you get a replacement.
