I have an automatic disco '03 reg that is stuck in a gear - won't go above 3000 revs! How do I sort this out? Please help!
Thanks

Update!! Had comp. plugged in no fault codes. Mech. took it for a drive and reckons it is stuck in a gear. On idle it sounds like a tractor( no **** takes)

Sorry guys had to move this from general chat, asked wifey to start topic.

Hi.

Do you mean it won't change gear.
If this is so it might be that the kickdown cable is stuck which is what happened to mine.
Several mins with dub-u-dee-phorty sorted it out....if not then i don't know apart from checking it with fault reader which you've done.....sometimes these diagnostics (even the Land rover T4) can be fooled buy certain things so an amount of investigating is required......does it do it in low box (if you have one)?

Nick.

There's no kick-down cable on D2's, it's all done via the various ECU's.

I wonder if the gearbox and the engine are in limp-home mode?

Ahhh......twas my classic that i was talking about....my p38 never did this fault, that was controlled by ecu's which was my rather crap connection.

I assumed that my new discovery was the same as the p38 which is why i mentioned the t4 diagnostics (which is probably out of date?)

All in all i think i win the prize for most useless comment today.....sorry

Nick.

Thanks guys, I assumed limp mode at first. But I expected a light or two on the dash. it's booked in on tuesday. So we will use all and any info to help with investigation:cool:

If it is in limp-home mode the gearbox will tell the engine to reduce max revs limit.

I would be looking at main battery quality (the 'box is very sensitive to low voltage), charging rate of the alternator, the XYZ switch, the electronic box (sorry, don't know it's correct name) on top of the gearbox (this gets water dripped onto it from the aircon drains).

I reckon the problem is electronic so it needs connecting to a good electronic diagnostic machine, otherwise you'll be advised to "put in a new gearbox mate, that'll be £3000", but it would do no harm to check the fluid level in the autobox as well.

Do you mean the engine won't go over 3k so the autobox doesn't shift up? Dunno how autos work, but maybe it's oil level, state of battery, I believe the electronics are sensitive to battery power levels.

Can you change the gears manually and get above 3k revs?

Maybe it's more of an engine issued, fuel supply/filters etc.

It will be an interesting result.

When you find out what is wrong, please post the answer.

My money is on the infamous XYZ switch being gummed up from the AC outlet.

I had all sorts of issues with mine, M & S lights on and off and the symptoms you described.

Once replaced, my beast goes like magic. Only 2000 odd revs at 60 MPH.

More fun than defeating the Mongoose army.:D

Simples.

CHECK YOUR OIL LEVEL!!!!!! sorry for shouting but I had lots of problems with my gearbox and it turns out it had a slight leak, the level dropped and my gearbox started to play up. I am now waiting for it to go into a garage to get the gearbox removed and the seal replaced.

Gearbox oil level & condition of oil
filter
check that the selector is moving properly (get someone to move the stick while you look and see if the selector lever is moving properly)

We had a very similar problem with an old Volvo, turned out the oil was old and ****ty ;)

Guys thanks for all the advice. Luckily the workshop I use lets me get my hands dirty thus reducing labour cost;).

We checked everything from turbo, egr, filters - nothing:doh:

The mechanic knew a guy who is a trouble shooter for LR (VERY BUSY apparantly):D

He pointed to the fuel pump straight away. So carpets in boot up and tested - KAPUT! new one from LR £240 + vat:eek:

Ebay! £130 plus p+p.:).

Job Done!!:clap2:
Goes like stink. old one was probably on the way out for some time hence all the posts on here from me about loss of power.

By the way it's an easy job to do - even for a plum like me:eek:

THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR HELP!

I am feeling god(oops! I mean good) next is the airbags:confused:

Hi there,

Why did he directy point out to the fuelpump?
(While everyone of us was thinking XYZ-switch)
What were the indications for him to point in that direction?

Always good to know when we get the same sympoms so we know what to check.

Thanks, Koen

I wonder if it was something along the lines of - engine not getting enough fuel pressure so goes into "limp-home" mode? That then tells the gearbox to stay in 3rd gear.

err, not everyone .. read my earlier post .. "Maybe it's more of an engine issued, fuel supply/filters etc."

Sorry guys, could'nt get on last night - t'internet probs:p
Gonna speak to mech. tomorrow and give update.
The LR bloke pointed straight to the pump when he was given symptoms.
No noise from pump on ignition 2. So far everything is going well(got my hand wrapped around a big piece of 4x2 tho.):D

What is the XYZ - switch?

Rob

Right spoke to me mech. and when he told the LR bloke he said you need to put into service mode/test mode.

1) ignition on
2) pump acclerator five times
3) dash light will flash.

Sorry if you already know all this guys.

The fuel pump will prime as if engine is running, so you can hear it properly. No noise meant f****d:doh:. Job done.

Big lad if you read this - you posted to farmer gal about egr blanking and de-cat. When you blank the egr do you need to do anything to comp. and does taking out cat affect mot etc.

cheers
