Can anyone tell me whether FL1 facelift clusters are coded to each individual car? and also has anyone ever put a V6 cluster in a 1.8 or viceversa?

That's a good question. It's unlikely they are VIN coded. However the Ipack will be expecting different data from the ECM, as the V6 is auto, and the 1.8 isn't.
Suck it and see I guess.

I'm probably going to have to use a CAN gateway to convert from Rover 75 CANbus packets to Freelander anyway. Maybe it makes more sense to convert them to Freelander V6 format so that a V6 cluster will work with the PRND123 display thing.

I managed to contact a fellow who put a R75 auto gearbox and ECU into a manual MG6 and that's how he did it (a CAN gateway). Basically he got it to convert R75 messages to MG6 messages so that the cluster and ABS worked.

Is a V6 ABS controller any different to a 1.8 or TD4 ? Hopefully they are the same so a V6 cluster will pick up CANbus messages from my 1.8 ABS controller.

I believe the ABS module is the same. It will also work as a stand alone, which is why an EV FL1 conversion will still have ABS brakes.

Not coded. Never changed a V6 and 1.8 around. Mileage appears to be held in the ipack in the instrument panel.
As you know, immobiliser and engine ecu are matched pair to key chip.

Sort of linked question, do you have the knowledge to reprogram the auto box ecu to change gear at different engine speeds to originally programmed ? Td4 labours and is always late to downshift on hills. Don't know what inputs tell the auto that it is going uphill?
You may need to tweak the jatco gear changes for the 1.8 too.

Do we know the auto display is not in all the clusters just not used ?
It's very likely the Ipack has all the hardware to display the gear position, just as they will all display the outside temperature, if the rest of the required hardware is installed, and the software updated to read and display the outside temperature.

The TCM calculates this based on engine load, engine speed and road speed. It doesn't need to know there is actually a hill, just how to calculate when the load on the engine exceeds torque available at the current engine speed.

I understand that the maps can be rewritten by a T4. Basically if a TD4 Jatco ECU is put into a V6 then I think that you can get T4 to recognise that it's the wrong ECU and update to make it a V6 one, so they are software re-mappable.

Whether anyone has actually figured out how to modify these maps? I doubt it.

can anyone tell me whether it's critical what year I take a V6 Jatco transmission from? Did this transmission mechanically change between 2001 and 2006? It seems easier to get older transmissions than newer ones with facelift V6s being very rare beasts. Maybe the electronics won't care what year the physical transmission is from.

There are some changes to the gearbox, but only a couple of sensors IIRC.
The early cars had the extra sensors, but these were dropped at about the same time the facelift came along. If an early trans is used with a later TCM, it'll just ignore them.
From what I understand, the early trans works fine with the later TCM, but not the other way round.
As the gearbox is likely to be older than a facelift, you should be fine.

Day 1 of the mods

Not very exciting but unfortunately necessary around here :-(

I need to do this to mine too! :(

Nice bit of fabrication - where did the material come from?
It's a sheet of corrugated roofing steel from Selco.
I flattened it by driving the Freelander over it a few times and then cut it up.
There's also so some flat bar inside it that I had sitting about in the garage

I made some progress today

This is a Rover 75 MEMS3 from an 1.8 auto running in the Freelander 1.8

As soon as I touch the accelerator pedal I get a hill descent error light on the dash though.

Throttle position and engine revs are coming though to the ABS ECU
