I recently purchased a 88, S IIA-63. It says 28395 on the odometer. It´s imported to Sweden 1996, I´m the third owner here. It´s not been driven much in Sweden by previous owners. As to judge from it´s interior colour it´s an ex MOD. The old lady is otherwise in good shape:)

Question though: 1. Is it likely she has run such a short distance as the odometer says in her life? 2. At what distance does the odometer reset? Grateful for answers and tips!

assuming yours has only 5 digits it will return to zero when you reach 100,000 - i.e. 99,999 +1 - miles or km depending which your odometer is set as, I am guessing if it is a series it will be miles, not sure if they were sufficiently sophisticated back then to do km odometers.

as to whether your displayed mileage is genuine or not you can't really tell unless you have supporting records of the annual reading e.g. from mot certificates if in the uk. It would be unlikely that the 28,395 is genuine but not beyond the realms of possibility, a rough calculation would be it has done circa 600 miles a year if it was built in 1963. The odometer could also have been manually reset or replaced during the last 50 years so the only way you can know for sure is if you have records of its annual mileage.

I guess one way to find out is to look into the condition, if your diffs have lots of play and also props, or if it's a diesel, how bad does it smoke ? Basically I'm saying if the engine and running gear are in good nick that's an indication and to be honnest, more important IMO

If the speedometer has been past its max the figures will no longer be exactly central they where built that way I believe so that they could not be clocked by turning them forward to get back to zero.

The figures are in center and there seems to be no scratch marks. I´ll settle with that and hope that the first owner imported an example with low milage. As mentioned previous, there are far more important aspects than milage but you´re always curious about it. Thanks all, now I will restore and cherish her ..(-:
