3rd Rock past the Sun ...
I am considering getting something TD6 and am curious to know how different the power delivery of the TD6 unit is and whether I'm wasting my time considering it. I'd like the answers to come from experience not the BS of motoring press review sites

I'm only upgrading because even with the work done the torque is simply not delivered by our Disco 2 TD5 appropriately - I need low end torque for towing not power for motorway cruising at 90mph. As it stands now I have no confidence in the clutch to handle what is being expected (pulling a 2.5 ton box)

I was forced into low box on Birdlip hill - a hill on which my old Landcruiser didn't even break into a sweat (but it's gearbox failed spectacularly and expensively after the oil cooler ruptured and filled the box with water last year).

The TD5 is the least power I have had in any car for the last 20+ years so maybe I'm spoiled - even my old Range Rover would have eaten it for breakfast (although it did benefit from some 'RPi' stg3 attention ;) ). In power terms our 09 2 litre Passat has more (250lb/ft @ 1750rpm and 168bhp) which kind of makes the TD5 sound a little pathetic given its purpose and weight.

Just to fill in any blanks before 'fixes' are suggested for my truck .... here is the list of works done - it isn't an ad - I want to know if a TD6 will be better. Currently boost starts coming in at around 1000rpm but it isn't really doing much worthwhile work until 1300rpm - the original turbo was simply crap with no balls until 2500rpm. The problem for me is the amount of rpm needed versus the amount of clutch slipping to get a 2.5 ton trailer moving. (Anti stall is ineffective - or non existent)

It's an 04 model Disco 2 5 seat ES on an 03 plate with 128k miles

Replaced, added or renewed :-
Fuel Pump,
All Filters front to back,
5 new Grabber tyres,
Turbo technics VGT turbo,
'refaced' and trued exhaust manifold (Wurth Studs used),
Allard motorsport 'LARGE' intercooler,
silicon intercooler hoses,
TD5 Alive boost box,
Exhaust Gas temperature monitor (Lumenition EG10),
Auber Instruments absolute pressure gauge,
EGR removed,
CAT removed and straight through stainless front pipe fitted (straight through centre also available but not fitted),
twin electrics 'adjustable height' rear towbar (Dixon Bate),
front pushbar with both centre and offset receivers (Watling).

these are just the power related 'fixes' ... I've done loads more

Turbo works the second the motor starts, you may not feel the boost until 1000,1300rpms like you said. Is normal. have you check your air filter or replaced it ever, had your inter cooler cleaned, egr valve blanked, changed fuel filters? How many miles on your td5

hes done all that!,

compared to a tdv6 the 5 is a bit outdated and under powered,
just simpler to work on! not as mush cost to buy!

Hi there, you don't say if you've had the engine re-mapped, just the boost box? I had mine re-mapped to achieve more low end torque and it transformed the vehicle, making towing up hills a no-brainer, stupidly easy.

Have you checked/cleaned the MAF?

Dave

Sorry forgot that bit - yes it has been remapped - twice. Once before the intercooler change and once after. MAF was replaced.

What were you towing ??

I have a twin axle box trailer that when loaded isn't far off 2.5 tons. On the flat it's easy but on hills - especially in traffic it SUCKS !!

To answer some other questions

128k miles on the car, inlet removed when EGR removed and degunged, MAP sensor cleaned up. The car will tow the trailer all day on the motorway but for stop start work with the trailer it is disappointing in the extreme - given what I have spent.

The trailer in question is properly serviced and has no brakes binding (it's a Blue Line BLV35206 - 3500kg with 2550kg useful payload)

I just don't want to move to a TD6 or TDV6 and be equally disappointed.
