Anyone got a rear drive shaft sitting on their bench?

Just building up the rear axle. I've replaced the axle on my 1987 90 (drums brakes) with a disco 1 rear axle - disc brakes uprated. However I didn't get the disco drive shafts so I'm using the old 90 ones.

The only difference is a small ridge about 175mm in from the outboard end of the shaft that locates against a seal in the stub axle on the disco shaft. If anyone has a shaft out could you measure the diameter of this bit please. I can then add material and machine to suit.

Thanks in advance,

Jon

Happily they are the right size. I had read about that issue but because it is the disco 1 axle they are identical save for the additional ridge.

Oh yeah jonnyt, I've got a few 10 spline disco shafts at work, can get a measurement to 0.01mm on Monday.

I think the seal lands are not constant diameter, they are fatter in the centre of the land I think. Will confirm that though. Sure you could machine them to a single dia though.

Thanks Mr Noisy - that would be great. There's no way I'm going to run out of things to do tomorrow fabricating bits that don't quite fit anymore!! Mounting plates for the mud shields for instance took an hour today to cut and re-weld as opposed to 3mins to bolt on.

Hey ho, all part of the fun I guess!

No probs! Pm me on Monday to remind me!!

Right I think we have established that I have an axle body that was intended to have 24 spline shafts in it. These were the only shafts with seal lands on the shafts for the stub axle seal. Anyway, my 10 spline shafts fit.

Mr Noisy is a 10 spline man and therefore doesn't have the dimensions. Has anybody else got one lieing around that they could measure for me please?

Ta.

Hi James - I'm confused! The axle casing is off a discovery one which as I understand it and from my measurements before I disassembled the axles has the same distance between the wheel mounting surface on the hubs. The casing is, save for some unnecessary metalwork welded on to it identical, specifically in terms of the distance between the stub axle mounting surfaces. Finally the distance between the mating surfaces of the drive hubs is also identical.

This must be why the driveshafts that I have fit I think. I have also measured the bore of the stub axle from the disco and the defender and they are the same. The explanation I've heard is that the early axles used axle oil to lubricate the hub bearings before the stub axle seal was introduced.

If all of the above is right the only material difference between the stub axles is the seal land for the stub axle seal on the shaft.

I suppose I could take the view that I use the defender approach and ignore the seal and lubricate the bearings that way?

true early axles did use oil for bearings then they put two seals in hub, then to seal in stub axle ,the difference between 200 tdi axle and 300 tdi disco i was referring too

ive got two disco 10 splines and two disco 24 splines sitting here if of use can even get carrier to get them to you for tomorrow if needed

I think I must have the 200 axle then - it was certainly sold to me as the earliest one which as far as I understood was virtually identical to the defender - anyway it seems to fit so far!

Thanks very much for the offer but I think the problem is that the 24 splines will be too short / not fit the diff or the drive hub and the 10 splines will be the same as I have. Could I ask you to measure the diameter of the seal lands on the 24 spline ones please?

Thanks for all the help,

Jon

i may be confused a bit in thinking what your after but you get 10 spline with no seal land up to ja 10 spline with seal land (ftc3186 ,ftc3187)from ja and 24 spline with seal land (shorter),its the middle set your after i presume unfortunately i havent those left but can give you a number of somone who may

Lucky!

Just pulled one out of a 300tdi Defender.

Seal land measures 31.86mm according to my vernier!

Hope that helps! :)

Thanks for the reply. Could you measure the seal land on the one you have please (10 or 24 spline I've lost track!) and I can then machine something up to see if it seals. If it doesn't I'll make it up from there!!

Jon

Brilliant. Thanks for the reply Mr Noisy. I'll post some pictures when I've done the mod.

Anybody any thoughts on why I shouldn't tig a little extra material in place....?
