My td 5 is now only going to be used to tow my caravan as we have bought a small car to run around in.It's a 2002 pre face lift TD 5 with 73,455 miles. In the summer we intend to travel with the caravan at least 4,000 miles in Europe,France,Spain. Now when I read on this forum that one can expect trouble about this mileage I am slightly concerned should I do this trip with this vehicle or get something newer with lower miles.
The TD 5 has been good for me with only a few niggles and of course a leaky sunroof now sealed. So the question is are there many of you out there that have had no or little problem with a vehicle of this age and mileage ? bearing in mind that the TD5 will be pulling a fairly heavy caravan in HOT weather up some mountain passes.Keep it or Change ?? Cheers malc

If you cross the road today you might get run over by a bus !

Just drive it & worry about if/when it happens. Life's too short to keep worrying. As the man said get breakdown cover.

i brought mine to NZ with 110,000 miles on it ( i must have been mental). joined the AA, been towed home once when i couldnt turn the key. i dont think of it as unreliable.

My 2002 TD5 has done 86000 ish miles with just regular servicing and consumables/wear parts replaced on schedule, still pulls like a train. There are minor irritations (central locking drives me nuts, poor quality of some of the interior finish shows over time) but its never let us down.

I`d get it serviced a couple of weeks before you go (just in case), get international breakdown with a get you home package and a hire car that will tow your van, make sure you are legal for the countries you are travelling through ( beam deflectors, spare bulbs, hi viz jacket , warning triangle, copy of V5/certificate of insurance, anything else - any or all of the above), and check your moby gets a good roaming signal in those countries (your service provider will tell you). And don`t forget the charger for your moby, ideally a car charger as well

Mine is a 1999 td5 with 126000 on the clock & i pull a twin axl caravan on holiday & pulls a car recovery trailer rest of year never been a problem only had two break downs in that time trust it and enjoy it its all part of the fun of being a landrover owner

I'd want to change the fluids all round for that period away from home, especially for the gearbox, auto or manual. Brake pads should be checked etc etc. Possibly a coolant flush and change.

Most breakdowns are rarely 'sudden', there are usually warning signs before the event.

Have a good look underneath, look for oil leaks/weeps on the axles and gearbox flange areas, try and spot something liable to progress from a weep to a leak.

Change the auxiliary belt as well.
