As a mobile tyre fitter I'm expected to know everything about tyres, yet today I had to blag and guess my way out. Customer has a TD5 disco on 16 inch rims and has been looking on eBay for a set of 18s. So I get asked "why are some 255/55/18 and some 255/60/18?"

I guessed that one size is for D2 and one is p38? Am I right? And if so which is which?

Sorry for the tyre question but as a mobile fitter and a Landy fan it bugged me that I didn't know. And yes I've tried searching, but I'm using my phone....and I'm thick.

Not as in the difference in the tyres. I mean LR wouldn't fit 2 very similar sizes on the same model would they? That's what made me wonder is one standard fit on the disco and one on the rangie?

errm nope as a "tyre fitter"?? you should know that tyres aren't made for specific models they're just different sizes, that are available..

That used to be true but lots of modern vehicles have tyre sizes specialy designed for them that don't fit anything else.

I've just had a look in the owner's handbook for the Disco 2 and it lists four different wheel types/sizes, so I would assume that it depends on the Disco version.

Listed are:

7Jx16 (steel) tyre size: 215/75 R16 or 235/70 R16
7Jx16 (alloy) tyre size: 235/70 R16
8Jx16 (alloy) tyre size: 255/65 R16
8Jx18 (alloy) tyre size: 255/55 R18

Which size is fitted to which version, I dunno.

So 55 profile is standard on 18s. Perfect thanks.

255/60/18 is a standard Rangerover size, but as the wheels are the same fit for both the P38 and the D2, wheels can swapped about.
Personally, I think tge 5% increase in side wall profile makes the tyre fill the arch a bit better and makes the speedo read dead right.
I run 255/70/16 BFG AT,s on mine.

I think you twigged it straight away.
