Another odd noise / vibration question

Started on the motorway doing about 55-60mph when I lift off the accelerator I get a grating or rattling sound from underneath for a second or two and then dies off. Had a look under and exhaust hanger bracket had a lot of play so tightened that up but still making noise. Only other thing I can see is it has a custom front exhaust fitted which seems to rest on the chassis so wondered if this could be vibrating. Only does it at high speed and only when easing off gas pedal.

Edit: Its an 89 defender 90 V8 station wagon if that helps

mine did that, but previous owner had put 2" lift - so changed it back to standard and the noise has gone - all the angles on the propshaft were wrong. he said he had replaced one of the uj's so I suspect i'll have to fix that too :doh:
just be methodical and you'll find the cause!

Had a similar problem with a new exhaust front pipe. It disappeared after I cut an inch out of it and welded it all up again!

Had a look and looks like the prop is about 2“ out of joint if that makes sense. Im no mechanic but doesnt look right. Ive read on the forum about a wide yoke prop that might cure it but it might be jan/feb before i can afford it. Is it likely to pop out or break in the mean time? I will try and get a photo of it.

Are the springs/dampers not standard size?

are you looking at a set of parallel splines along the length of the prop ?

Yes there is a 40mm lift fitted I believe

That's why I put standard suspension back on, on mine. The radius arm and the trailing arm (if that's correct) will be at the incorrect castor angle too - have a look at your rubber bushes and you most likely will see what i mean unless cranked arms have been fitted to suit the suspension.
So either change the suspension or get a new prop shaft that fits. But wait for further posts for better qualified information than mine as I'm fairly new to this and most every one here knows more than me!
