Another 'lectric problem!

Just failed an MOT!!!

Literally overnight, the left indicators have started to flash very quickly so Mr MOT gave me a red piece of paper:mad:

I got home and checked all three lamps, cleaned the contacts but still the same problem. The right indicators operate fine and when I put on the hazard lights, both sides operate fine.

I've done a search and can't find anything similar to this problem.

Any pointers to this problem?

might be your relay
 
yeah its just a switch that swaps the circuit, its the same flasher circuit.

must be a bad connection.

when it starts flashing fast, whip more bulbs out and see if it gets faster or makes no difference.

the one that makes no difference is your faulty circuit.

theres 4. sounds like ones duff.
front ,rear, repeater on wing, dash.
 
To be precise, there are five on mine -
Front
Side
Rear
Dash + trailer light.

When I remove any of them (front/side/rear) they still flash at the same rate - bloody quick!
 
How many rear indicators do you have, 2 or 4? If I remember correctly (not easy at my age) someone had a problem with the upper light cluster because It had been changed from not having an indicator to having one, if you see what I mean. Not much help but.....
 
Quick Tip

You could wire an additional bulb in to the system inside the car to produce an extra load and slow the indicator down
 
bad earth time if all appear to working.
put the bad side on, then check all other lights for signs of lighting up. (might have to stick yer eye right up to lens to see the quick glow of a lamp filament)

bad earths can be a twart to find and cause wierd symptoms.
 
Make SURE the rear lamp cluster is properly EARTHED.

Bad earth there is a classic cause of all sorts of problems.

It's just a thought and I'm probably very wrong but would a fault on a tow bar loom make the flashers faster, I was just thinking that if all the bulbs are working and all are bright then a bad earth wouldn't increase the resistance of which this points too.

it would if it current were travelling thru another light unit and down another earth path.
thats why i said look closely for other lamps glowing.

only way towing electric will make faster flashes is if theres a short.
(unless trailer boards plugged in, then theres even more possiblity of a bad earth!)(or short)
 
Check all the bulbs are of the correct wattage (not voltage) as this could fool the circuit into thinking a bulb has blown and flash fast.
 
Would check rear bumper indicators units usually fill with water condensation or bad seal causing short to ground or high resistance on the connection through corrosion (higher load hence rapid flashing)
