Aluminum corrosion

Hi Guys
My wing mirrors have quite a bit of corrosion on their base's. I plan to remove them and clean up an re-spray. Are the base's painted or powder coated? once i have them off the car and the old coating sanded off what's the best way to clean them up? Can they just be painted conventionally or does aluminum req a different process?

if you can take them off then powder coating is a good option will last a long time if done properly

Clean wipe with thinners and apply acid etch primer straight away allow to dry. Then conventional primer and top coat or base coat and lacquer as required.

Dry sand using 180 to give something for the etch primer to work with

Bit expensive for a wing mirror repair. Supurb stuff though, although any paper towels/rags soaked in it tend to spontaniously combust when they dry out in the right conditions. Also very carsonogenic. Think etch primer is a better bet.

Bit on the expensive side when 10 litres is around £45.00 at my local paint supplier. But then again ten litres is a little too much for a wing mirror base.

You can't get a GOOD etch primer in an areosol it would eat through the can. Good etch primer is a two part base and acid mix. Breathing the fumes from it is seriously not good for you. Whatever you use make sure the alloy is shiny, then wash with thinners dry and apply a coating straight away. If you leave alloy untreated it will oxydise almost straight away.

If being convenient is a licence to print money, well yes i suppose your right. Personally i would go to the paint wholesaler through the week. Or if i ran out on a weeked wait til Monday when they were open. Think i have a couple of litres in garage so the problem won't come up. Another one like Halfrauds is B&Q me and her indoors had a look around garden stuff other day. I needed a few frame fixings, some 3" x 10 screws and a 10mm SDS extension drill. Drill £13.08, frame fixings around £12.00 i think, 25 3" x 10 screws £6.94. Went out disgusted, went to Allthread got 100 3" x 10 screws, 12 screw in 10mm x 120mm frame fixings, 10" SDS extension drill. Toal cost £13.00. F**K B&Q.

Kingfisher Group (B&Q) bought out Castorama over here a few years back, the ramp up in prices was noticable in weeks

It's horrendous Keith. Forgot to mention tin of expanding foam i got the day after. £10.00 + from B&Q £4.99 from Allthread same tin, same brand. But at Allthread i get trade discount. So it was less than £4.99. If i had bought the drill,screws, fixings i got for £13.00 from Allthread at B&Q it would have cost £56.00. Years ago Halfrauds, B&Q and a few others used to be really good value, now they are a serious rip off. What is truly amazing is there are people who think they are cheap. Truly unbelievable.

Blimey, I've been paying €1.99 for cans of expanding foam! The Uk is expensive for some things.
